Bio
Eugene, OR "supergroup" RUNAWAY SLAVE began when family members Jessiah Simon and Jason Moss forged a songwriting partnership :: Simon formerly fronted Natural Progression, a hip hop/jazz quartet playing weekly gigs at Jo Federigo's :: Moss has been the Cherry Poppin' Daddies' guitarist since 1992, back when the platinum-selling band's repetoire drew as much from Funkadelic and Earth, Wind and Fire as from the swing era it's linked with in the public mind :: Ex-Reeble Jar keyboardist Josh Coffey, the most recent addition to the Runaway Slave lineup, was part of the force behind one of Eugene's top-drawing bands :: Drummer John Raden and bassist Terry Travis grew up together in the musical mecca of Gaylord, MI. Now they're fixtures in the Eugene musical scene, playing with the Dead Americans, the Ginger Hustlers (John), and now RUNAWAY SLAVE :: Runaway Slave's 's new songs unite Jessiah's hip hop styles and poetry with Jason's soulful, blues-based guitar. Imagine Rage Against the Machine tempered with a bit of the Meters and Curtis Mayfield. As the great Bob marley sang, "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, for none but ourselves can free our minds." RUNAWAY SLAVE is about freedom.
