RUN FOR THE WILLOW 2006 PREVIEW
The spark for Run for the Willow came at the start of April 2005. Professional sprinter Chris Tuohy stumbled upon the Tinetti's Cricket Willow oval and was blown away by the picturesque setting and impressive facilities. Chris chatted with the Tinetti family about the prospect of staging an athletics meeting at this unique venue.
The inaugural Run for the Willow carnival was held at Cricket Willow on 19 November 2006. Perfect conditions greeted over 350 entrants and hundreds of spectators for a full day of racing and entertainment. The day commenced with a 6km fun run to ‘Dandeloo and back’ and was followed by an afternoon of professional footrunning of the highest calibre.
Toowoomba turbo Nathan Allen proved to be the crowd favourite with six wins from six races, including the $2,000 Cricket Willow Gift. Chris Tuohy finished a close second and Olympic sprinter Joshua Ross ran third from the scratch mark.
At the conclusion of the 2005-06 season Run for the Willow was named a joint winner of the Victorian Professional Running Meeting of the Year. This success was attributable to terrific support from sponsors, athletes, volunteers and officials.Work is now underway to make the event even bigger and better in years to come.

Time to get set for Run for the Willow 2006
We are now well and truly into count down mode for the 2nd Run for the Willow, so we thought it a good time to make some announcements.
Firstly we are proud to announce that Telstra Country Wide are our naming rights sponsor and the main event on the day will be the Next G Network 100m Daylesford Gift. We are extremely happy to have a great sponsor in Telstra Country Wide and look forward to a long and happy relationship with them.
Our other great sponsors are Mizuno, Back in Motion, Peppers Springs Retreat, John Evans Real Estate, VCCL, Sandhurst Trustees, Australian Clothing Company and Endura.
Other exciting news is our star runner this year. Daniel Batman the Australian 200 meter champion will be participating. Daniel is ranked #2 of all time Australian athletes. He recently ran at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, and is looking forward to his first professional race for the season.
Another exciting runner competing will be Cameroon's champion sprinter Sani Biao, who was a special guest at the event launch earlier this month and took the opportunity to test the grounds before he returns for the Daylesford Gift. Biao said he was looking forward to getting in some extra competitive running around the Telstra A Series. He ran second to the world's fastest man Asafa Powell back in March at the Commonwealth Games, but is looking forward to taking on the likes of Daniel Batman at the Gift.
Nathan Allan, cricket willow’s defending champion in both sprint events is returning from Toowoomba and is hoping to emulate his achievements at the first willow gift. Allan said he is still pushing to get his own spot in the Australian team and running against the likes of Batman and Biao will be great.
Another runner of note is Adrian Mott, the 2006 Stawell gift winner has entered the Telstra Next G gift. His performance at Stawell puts him on par with Josh Ross Australia’s raining national title holder so his performance is much anticipated. Josh is yet to confirm his start at the willow this year but with these four in the field it might not be to long till we see his name as a return runner for willow 06.
The running is set to take place on December 9th starting at around 11am AEST. Keep an eye on our “you tube” station http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=run4willow . If you would like to contact us please email runforthewillow@hotmail.com

RUN FOR THE WILLOW 2005 WRAP-UP
Toowoomba turbo Nathan Allen scooped the pool at the inaugural Run for the Willow on Saturday 19 November 2005. The Queenslander was undefeated on the day in six races including the $2,000 Cricket Willow Gift and the $500 Mizuno Handicap. Unfortunately he had little time to celebrate with a 6am return flight to Toowoomba.
Allen was backed on-course into even money for the Gift final and ran true to form to win in a time of 11.09 from Chris Tuohy and a fast finishing Joshua Ross from the scratch mark. Allen and Ross thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to compete at the picturesque Cricket Willow oval and both said they look forward to returning again next year.
Cricket Willow proprietor Ian Tinetti presented Ross with a specially made Jabaroo cricket bat in recognition of his support for the new event. Ross used Run for the Willow to launch his preparation for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
Other winners on the day were:
Zane Elliott of Geelong in the $200 Australian Clothing Company 100m U/21.
Sandra Pollard of Mount Waverley in the $500 Interlude Restaurant 100m Women’s Handicap.
David Flowers of Glen Iris in the $250 Repco Auto Car Care Hallam 100m Invitational.
Craig Lancaster of Donvale in the $500 Peppers Springs Retreat 400m Handicap.
Glenn Weston of Daisy Hill in the $500 Hocking Stuart 800m Handicap.
Greame Watkins of East Geelong in the $500 VRTA 1600m Handicap.
Nathan Hartigan of Mount Helen in the male 6km “Dandeloo and Back” fun run.
Christine O’Halloran of Ballarat in the female 6km “Dandeloo and Back” fun run.
Wishing you much fun and happiness in this red white & green period! Here's our little gift for you:
Also please remember to beware of fruit based attacks all year round. Turnip tickling results in more injuries at this time of year than the government dare tell us!
