About me: In 1977, the unincorporated areas of Knox County Tennessee merged into one fire department. That fire department is Rural/Metro which protects roughly 200,000 citizens from 14 fire stations. (Knox County is also protected in the Karns, Seymour and Heiskell areas by volunteer departments which Rural/Metro has a strong working relationship with). Rural/Metro runs what is called a “combination” fire department which means that there is opportunity for all types of people to participate! We have a career staff of roughly 100, supplemented by part-time firefighters that are paid on call. Rural/Metro Fire has a total staff of around 200 firefighters.
We are always actively looking to supplement our ranks either through our preferred entry program where we add already trained firefighters to our ranks, and through running recruit academies where you come to us and get trained to national standards in firefighting. We are currently looking here in the Knoxville area. Give us a shout if you’re looking for a new career or just looking to have the most meaningful part-time employment of your life!
