Russell’s first DJ experiences started at the very young age of 10 playing classic house, soul and hip hop at youth club disco’s, getting up in front of a crowd at such a young age fuelled Russell’s confidence for what he was dreaming about pursuing as a career.
In 1994 Russell was fortunate enough to land himself with a Saturday job as a studio manager answering the phone’s for the legendary Freedom FM, Brighton’s first legal dance station, this is where Russell really began to gain some good experience about the industry and meet other like minded people.
Growing up as a teenager in the early nineties Russell was heavily influenced musically by the likes of Bobby & Steve, Tony Humphries, Joey Negro and his biggest inspiration Paul Trouble Anderson.
In 1995 Russell worked for DFM 101.4, this time his role was a lot more involved, he did everything from help build the studio through to engineer outside broadcasts and he was also lucky enough to have his own show giving him the exposure he needed to begin his quest as a DJ.
At DFM Russell was working alongside the like’s of Marshall Jefferson, Dave Clark & Norman Cook, after DFM Russell began to secure gig’s playing at various venues around Brighton & Hove.
In July 2007 Russell located himself in Bournemouth for just over a year where he was working on a number of different projects including promoting Get Spinny & Ultra Phunk Delite he was also playing at Havana’s, One Seven Six & The Bazaar Bar, during this time he also made trips to London to play at Bar 54.
While in Bournemouth Russell was taken on board as a resident DJ for one of the south coast biggest soulful house brands God Made Me Funky.
During August Russell Co presented the God Made Me Funky radio show on Bournemouth’s Deep Blue FM, the weekly show treated the people of Bournemouth to some of the best in upfront & classic funky and soulful house, the show brought the sound of underground London radio to the airwaves of the Dorset coast and the lively Saturday morning show was a big hit with the locals as well as online listeners around the world.
Following on from the success of the radio show Russell had the pleasure in playing at the God Made Me Funky boat party along side Sy Sez from the Aphrodisiax and the legend that is Paul Trouble Anderson.
Russell is now based back in his home town of Brighton and 2009 is already looking good with gigs lined up playing for: God Made Me Funky, Soul for Life, Bobby and Steve Presents, Not For Squares and the Soul Village Weekender.
Russell is really beginning to make movements in the world of soulful house and has quite a following in Brighton, London and Bournemouth as well as becoming known for his popular mixes, podcasts and radio shows in other parts of the world.
