  • Bio

Born near Chicago, Russ began playing music as a teenager. Later, the sounds of the steel guitar became an obsession and at the age of 21 Russ took up playing the steel guitar playing at various night clubs in and around Calumet City, Indiana, and the Chicagoland area. After several years of local night club work, Russ began touring with Grand Ole Opry entertainer Billy Walker. During that time, DeWitt 'Scotty' Scott, steel guitar entrepreneur and founder of the annual Internaional Steel Guitar Convention, noticed the talent that Russ had, not only for the steel guitar but for music in general, and invited Russ to become part of Scottys Music in St. Louis. In the late 70’s Russ became the manager of the steel guitar department at Scotty’s Music. That was just the beginning – Russ went on to become one of the most respected among the struggling musicians and professional musicians alike. He helped the struggling musicians by being their teacher and also has often been called on to make chord charts for the professional steel players when they played at the International Steel Guitar Convention held in St. Louis each labor Day Weekend. It didn’t end there! He also is called upon to play the bass for numerous professional players. This often requires him to travel to many cities around the country. While living in St. Louis Russ played and recorded with many local entertainers in the St. Louis area. Throughout the 1980’s he was steel guitarists for the KSD Radio live road shows also featuring musicians, Pappy Wade Ray, Jimmy Queen, and Bobby Caldwell, and was the steel guitarist for Wade’s TV show “Pappy’s Place”. He also played many clubs with local bands in the St. Louis area. His talents did not go unrecognized by famous singers. In the mid-70’s he toured and played the Grand Ole Opry with Billy Walker. Russ also has a ‘second name’ – "Jimmy Day'! He takes on the “second name” when he performs with Gail Bliss on the theatre musical “Patsy!” He has played this show on and off for many years which took him from Nashville to St. Louis to Branson to Toronto, Canada and touring many, many cities in between. He was also the music director on all of those shows. He also tours on another Broadway musical called “Hank Williams Lost Highway”, playing non-pedal steel in the role of Don Helms. He has performed many times at the International Steel Guitar Convention which lead to other steel guitar promoters requesting him to play at their show in such cities as Dallas, Branson, Grand Rapid, New York, Chattanooga and Sydney, Australia at their Australian Steel Guitar Convention. Russ’s talents goes much further than pure country or country jazz. Many times he has performed with jazz organist, Richard “Groove” Holmes in St. Louis jazz clubs. More about Russ – besides all the above he found time to teach on a “one on one” basis and through many 'CD instruction courses', is a staff bass player at the annual International Steel Guitar Convention, and computer programmer for music sound tracks and much, much more. Russ now resides in the Kansas City area with his lovely wife, Carla, and is quite active in music performance, lately performing in several Broadway musicals at the Manhattan Ensemble Theatre and Schubert Theatre in New York City. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
