Russ has spent much of his drumming career as a freelance player, and has worked for a number of top studios as a session musician, including AMG Studios in Hampshire, UK, and Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Bath, UK - providing drums for demos, and loops for dance music sample CDs. In the late 90’s Russ was involved in a Dance Music project “EONZ” with Travis keyboard player, Adam Wakeman (Son of Rick). In 2003 he worked with Canadian Indie Rock band – Hpisces performing unplugged sessions for UK BBC Radio and recorded backing tracks for a debut album. In 2004 Russ joined Tantalus, the well known UK Progressive Rock band, and performed at several festivals with the band, as well as the recording of a live DVD (so far unreleased). During 2005 Russ concentrated on the lucrative Tribute band scene and worked with several acts including Wingspan, Platinum Blondie and Abba Rival. Whilst with Wingspan he played in Liverpool at The Adelphi and The Cavern as part of the International Beatles week. During 2006 Russ began working with Kent (UK) based Blues/Rock band - The Sharpees and played many gigs with them including the British Superbike Championship Meeting at Brands Hatch racing circuit and short tours of Belgium, France and Greece. Russ continues to work occasionally with his Sharpees bandmate, Geoff Everett, including some recent studio work. Last year he was asked to play drums on UK Progressive Rock band, Vienna Circle’s debut album – White Clouds. The latest bands Russ is working with are Led Zep Too - "The best Zep Tribute by far" and The Pink Floyd Experience. He is also hoping to record a new album with the reformed "Tantalus" with Max Hunt in 2009, as well continuing to gig with his own Jazz Fusion Band - "Asbo Jazz".
Russ was a long-term member of Curfew a UK based Jazz/Fusion band, he has recorded three albums with them – Somewhere in the City (1997), Return of the Jazz Fusioneers (2001) and Hold the Front Page (2005). Curfew have been very active on the Jazz Festival circuit for many years. Russ left Curfew in 2007 following a 10 year stint with the band, in order to pursue other major projects, such as his tuitional DVD, currently in the making.
Russ Wilson has worked with many well known producers including Lee Groves (Craig David, Terminalhead), Chris Potter (The Verve, The Rolling Stones) and George Shilling (The Corrs, Steve Winwwod). Thanks again, and I hope to see your name on our order list. I also hope the materials inspire cool ideas in your playing and thinking.
Hi Russ. You always try to pinch the best seat in the van when we travel together. Your legs aren't appreciably longer than mine yet you use that argument ad nauseum to that end. But I forgive you 'cos you're an amazing drummer and nearly as handsome as I am.
