Born in David City, Nebraska, Ruth left home at age seventeen to attend art school in Chicago. Her job designing costumes at the Marigold Gardens nightclub led to employment singing and dancing in the chorus there. She became a featured vocalist at the nightclub.
She made her Broadway debut in the "Ziegfeld Follies of 1927", and appeared in a number of other hit shows in rapid succession, including "Simple Simon" and "Whoopee!".
In Hollywood she made a long series of movie shorts between 1929 and 1936, and three feature movies in 1933 and 1934. In 1936, She appeared in London in Ray Henderson's "Transatlantic Rhythm".
Her version of "Ten Cents A Dance" (in 1999), and her version of "Love Me or Leave Me" (in 2005) were inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame.
Now that I'm working again I don't get the time I'd like to spend on here but believe me I haven't forgotten my wonderful myspace friends. What a wonderful world we live in when you can make friends all over the world. I hope you're having a great week. What an honor it is to have you as a friend.
Thank that Jeri Lynn grrrl for me would you? She deserves nothing but the best...her card was beautiful! But, I did not even get to read her return message on the messenger service, I accidentally deleted it somehow, while I was clearing other windows off to get to it...this bums me out! So, please Ruthie...give her a big hug for me! Your biggest fan ~ Tim xoxo
Ruth~The weather is so nice and cool here today in Alabama.I stepped outside this morning to replinish my birdfeeder and noticed that some of the leaves have already begun to change color.Autumn is on its way! ~Come said the wind to the leaves one day, come 'ore the meadows and we will play. Put on your dresses Scarlet and gold, For summer is gone and the days grow cold. (A childrens song of the 1800's) Hope you enjoy this beautiful day! Hugs, Miss Shannon
Jack Cullen called me on the telephone just the other day. Do you know what he said? He said he talked to you and you told him that Connee Boswell, Helen Kane, and yours truly were your biggest competition during the 1930's. I think you were the greatest star of them all! And don't you forget it! I still think I'm just another one of those old fashioned
jazz singers. Have you heard me sing lately? Love and kisses, your friend forever, Annette Hanshaw, "That's All."
