Ruth Joanna Royes was born on the 27th of January, 1987 to Ralph and Charmaine Royes in Kingston, Jamaica. Born into a close knitted Christian family, with both parents having held leadership positions in their home church. Ruth “grew up on God.” She is currently attending Humber College in Toronto, Canada where she has completed a certificate program in commercial jazz music and is now pursuing a degree in contemporary music.
Ruth realised her interest in music from an early age when she endeavoured to learn to play the violin at age 9 under the guidance of Ms. Moyah Gibson. After being encouraged to sing by her sister, she joined the Youth Music Ministry at her church (Swallowfield Chapel). After a couple months of singing she realised that this was the path she wanted her life to take. More importantly, she felt it was what God wanted her to do.
Ruth has been influenced by various genres. When asked, “What’s your style?” She simply responds, “It’s a fusion of Jazz & Blues, Reggae and everything else under the sun.” She speaks of her music with enthusiasm: “It’s my way of letting people know what’s going on with me; it’s my way of expressing myself. I’m not much of a talker but for some reason when I’m on a stage I can just be myself. And I really just enjoy doing it. ”
