Ryan Hanifl is a new emerging artist in the music world. Once a member of several touring groups VERTICES, THE SIZAR SHIP, & YOUR HORRIBLE SMILE, Ryan decided to leave the “band life” and concentrate on making music that is entirely his own. In 2007, Ryan wrote, arranged, produced, performed, and recorded all the music on his first full-length solo debut Sourpuss.
The diversity in Ryan's music comes from his out-of-the-ordinary background, having grown up in a small rural farming town in Minnesota. At 8 years old Ryan became a member of the prestigious Boys Choir of La Crosse, WI, that had him traveling the globe by his 12th birthday. And although Ryan did not take music too seriously until he picked up a guitar at the age of 18, he eventually enrolled and graduated with scholarships from renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2001.
From Massachusetts he moved to Los Angeles where he began working with A-list film composer Hans Zimmer as an assistant, but soon branched off on his own as an in-house composer for a Los Angeles based music production company. There Ryan wrote and produced hundreds of custom music cues for reality television, advertising clients, and national television spots. Eventually the routine nature of writing for a production library took its toll and Ryan found himself in a recording deal and on the road with his band, affording him the pleasure of performing before crowds across America and at key music festivals like SXSW.
Ryan’s classical training combined with his pop and commercial background is what gives Sourpuss its theatricality and yet simultaneous independent quality. Ryan Hanifl is a new kind of artist, one that is distinctly original but universally appealing.

Chet Baker in your friend space..... Yeah, man....one of my favorites. I like West Coast cool just fine, although I don't know that I want to put Chet in the "Cool" category. Chet's just West Coast with certain "Cool" elements in the sound.
You know, every so often I look at that Your Horrible Smile profile pic, and I think two things: 1.) The two guys in the back look like old roadies who smoke tons of joints. 2.) The guy in the front looks collegiate, like he doesn't belong in the band.
Well thats good, glad to hear your cooking all those cues in an oven, rather than on a stove. Wow that was deep stuff. Lmao. Im pretty good, just finished my second week of school. Besides that ive been working on some of my better poems to send out to publishers, we will see what they say one day. And I think we should hang maybe next weekend
If you're gonna record music, it's better to drink ox blood at room temperature. For listening, just pour a liter into your stereo system and hear how it sounds out of your monitors. You'll hear a difference that's incomparable.
I wish we could say we planned last night...but it was GREAT to see you and the little lady! How effin random was that?! Last 2 weeks...HURRAH...you go get 'em tiger and call me when all is said and done! Hugs, Char
Hey Ryan- I had a blast partying last night. I really enjoyed listening to you sing. You have an AMAZING talent. Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in LaX and safe travels back to LA...
