Ryan currently resides in Seattle and is the lead guitarist for Zazou and the rhythm guitarist for Pearl Django, though you might also catch him playing with other excellent acts such as Hot Club Sandwich, The Floogies, The Djangomatics, Trio a Propos and what-have-you. He also has his own Swing Jazz duo that tastefully ambiates many fine Northwest establishments. In addition to his work as a performer, Ryan gives private lessons and general advice upon demand. Ryan Hoffman grew up in Kansas City and began studying the guitar when he was but a wee lad. During his formative years, he played in a number of pop rock bands and toured the dusty reaches of western Kansas as far as Garden City! As if that wasn’t glory enough, it was in the legendary musical oasis of Kansas City where Ryan reached the peculiar pinnacle of his youthful Mid-western rock star aspirations as the lead guitarist for an expatriated Korean rock star. Shortly thereafter, Ryan moved to the UK leaving tornado alley and Reaganomics far behind. After a number of rich musical experiences in England, Ryan clicked his heels together three times and returned penniless to the US. Back home on the back porch in the back woods of Kansas, Ryan discovered his passion for acoustic music, learning to flat-pick fiddle and ragtime tunes on the gi-tar and tormenting his neighbors with a newly found fascination for the banjo. Since that back porch epiphany, Ryan has never veered from his love of acoustic music though, thankfully, he no longer plays the banjo. He has hung his hat hither, thither, far and yonder; from the Appalachian source of bluegrass to New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz – always learning and always seeking new musical experiences. Recently, Ryan returned from living in Europe where he had the good fortune to be able to study Manouche jazz with excellent guitarists, Fapy Lafertin and Samy Daussat. While in Paris, he shared the jam stage with Samy Daussat, Angelo Debarre, Sebastien Giniaux, David Reinhardt, Noe Reinhardt, and Pere Soto all at one time or another. Since then, Ryan has performed on stage with well known musicians such as Howard Alden, Darol Anger, Robin Nolan, Andreas Oberg, and Ken Peplowski. For all you guitar gear-heads out there, Ryan plays a hand built Selmer style guitar made by the French luthier Alain Mazaud (http://www.guitares-mazaud.fr). Never fear turtle enthusiasts, Ryan uses Wegen simulated tortoise shell picks and Argentine silver plated strings. Long story short, Ryan loves to play that guitar. He plays it day in and day out. As a matter of fact, he is probably playing guitar as you read this.
