Sounds Like
A combination of all the above influences that culminates into a country/folk/rock amalgam that is unique and yet has a familiarity that is appealing. A guitar that can at times sound like three guitars and melodic vocals and harmonica that weave in and out of the guitar lines creatings an intriguing sound that gains more and more depth with each subsequent listen. RYAN STERLING: NEVER REALLY THERE...........
NORTHCOTE singer/songwriter Ryan Sterling has stepped away from his raucous rock sound to deliver an introspective solo album, NEVER REALLY THERE.............
Inspired by the country and folk influence of Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clarke, Steve Earle and Nick Drake, Never Really There represents a new direction for the musician.............
Formerly one half of rock duo Ryan Sterling and Shane French and collaborator in Red Rattler, Sterling has delved into a world of relationships and observation, producing a more mellow sound...............
Sterling wanted to be a musician from the moment he heard the Stones’ Start Me Up at Diamond Creek East Primary School. He soaked up everything from the glam pop of T-Rex to the white bread rock of Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA............
On Never Really There, Sterling brings melody to the forefront, stripping back the songs to raw honesty.................
“The songs are observational – about my relationships and friends’ relationships, putting myself in their position,” he said.
“They are snapshots of people’s lives and emotions.”.............
Displacement and isolation are key themes on Never Really There, Sterling says.............
“During the songwriting process, I was able to step outside of myself. The songs are quite desolate and reflect a feeling of being lost, but they are still uplifting and inspiring.”.............
Recorded at Melbourne’s Sub Studios and featuring an impressive lineup of guest artists, Never Really There showcases Sterling’s versatility as a musician, with instrumentals sitting alongside emotion-charged tracks. ..................
Downhills Home guitarist Michael Hubbard features on two tracks, as does Clinkerfield member Andrew Alves playing the banjo..............
As well as writing and recording Never Really There, 2007 has seen Sterling cement his reputation on the Melbourne live music scene, with regular gigs at The Stork, Rob Roy and Empress Hotel and appearances on PBS, 3RRR, Channel 31 and the Yackandandah music festival
