I grew up in a small town in Minnesota. My sister is a great deal younger than me so I had a lot of practice taking care of her as she grew up. The town I grew up in had no need for nannies, but I was able to spend a lot of time watching kids. After leaving Minnesota I took off for school in Florida where I graduated with a degree in recording arts. After Florida I moved to New York where I continue to reside.
In the summer of 2006 I started working for a family. Eventually, by word-of-mouth, I ended up working with quite a few families. Soon families I didn't know were calling me up and asking me of my availability. A Williamsburg journalist caught wind of my reputation and after doing an interview for a magazine I was titled, "Ryan the Manny". That led to other interviews and radio talk shows.
I was curious as to why I was getting attention for doing what comes natural. I came to realize that most nannies don't spend a lot of time interacting with the kids. It's important to play with the kids, talk with the kids, and genuinely get to know them. One of the many rewards of working with children is that they remind you of the magic, beauty, and curiosity of life that we tend to forget as adults. While the kids teach me many things on a daily basis, I want to be sure that I am able to teach them love and compassion toward everyone.
