“I was the little girl who would retreat to a quiet corner, armed with a pen and pad, and retell my day to a melody.”
A self-proclaimed “story-teller,” singer/songwriter Ryn Nicole delivers lyrical messages with the diverse influences of folk, pop, soul, and soft rock. Take the steady narration of Tracy Chapman, the playful enthusiasm of Sara Bareilles, and the soft vocal stylings of Colbie Caillat and one may begin to try and categorize this artist’s unique, heart-warming sound. “It’s feel-good music,” she laughs, “There’s really no other way to classify it.”
With a voice as clear as a bell, Ryn Nicole carries her listeners one verse at a time through a purely human journey of emotion and event.
“I write from experience. I think a lot of music is lacking truth these days, but truth is what the audience relates to,” and truth in her lyrics is exactly what one will receive.
In the pain-filled track entitled “I Thought Maybe,” penned after ending a relationship with a cheating boyfriend, Ryn croons: How could I have been so naïve as to ever think that I/Could ever be special in your eyes? “Anybody who has ever been cheated on or lied to in a relationship can relate to that. You feel stupid for having given your trust. It’s an anthem.”
Also finding inspiration in more unconventional places, “Through the Rain” offers fans an up-beat number about friendship under clear skies and sunshine: Through the rain and the sorrow/
If you lead I will follow/Through the pain and the good times/If it rains today I’ll be your sunshine.
“It had been raining for literally two weeks straight; then I woke up one morning to sunlight, a warm hug, and a smile. That day was beautiful; it inspired me.”
From as early on as she can remember, Ryn Nicole has been “inspired” to write music. “I still have this song tucked away that I wrote when I was very young. I couldn’t have been more than six years old; all the words are spelled wrong!” she giggles, “It’s about a butterfly I must have seen while sitting on the front porch. I guess it captivated me. Butterfly butterfly/I watched you fly away/ Butterfly butterfly/I wish you could have stayed. I remember thinking that was the one that would for sure get me a Grammy!”
But long before she had even learned to pick up a pen, she was singing. “My grandmother swears I was singing farachaca at six months old! It was before I had even said my first words. Whether or not it’s true, music is my most familiar and most precious gift. When I sing its like I can breathe in life, but when I write it’s my chance to exhale.”
Young, gifted, and eager, Ryn Nicole offers a medley of musical genres able to unite the distinct of taste through the perfect combination of life stories and a delivery all her own. A singer, songwriter, and pianist in her own right, Ryn Nicole writes music that people can laugh with, cry with, but most importantly- music they can feel. Today is a good day/And I feel better than okay. Her music ensures there will be more good days to come.
