About me:
Hi, my name's David Batista (aka Ryodin).
I was born and raised in the South Bronx, so that makes me a mean mo-fo! Nah, I'm actually quite nice if you get past my serious exterior. That's just there to scare off any would-be trouble makers.
I'm fluent in Mandarin Chinese and speak just a little Spanish. I understand a good deal, and can read more Spanish than I can speak, but definitely would like to learn more and become fluent in that as well. I love learning languages and wish I could find the time to learn more. Particularly Arabic.
I work for a major publisher of legal & financial content (books, cds, online, etc.) located in the West Village of NYC. At the moment, I'm pursuing my dream to become a serious player on the Speculative Fiction market, honing my writing skills and hoping to publish something soon. Took several years off from writing after college, but just recently got back into the game with a vengeance. My main focus is sci-fi, but I also dabble in: fantasy; neo-noir detective; cyberpunk; space opera; urban fantasy; and even horror.
Besides writing and reading everything I can in my spare time, I also enjoy movies and tv shows. Pretty much anything goes, but of course I lean more towards the genre stuff. However, my favorite tv channels are History, Discovery, and The Science Channel. My Tivo is backlogged with programming from these stations. I also enjoy working out, particularly running. Nothing like a good 5-mile run to get the blood pumping and those endorphins flowing for the day!
I'm also an avid video gamer, though I find myself with a lot less time to play these days than I used to.
I only call a few people "friends," but those who are mine remain so for life. I've also had the great fortune to meet my beautiful, darling wife back in high school, and we have been together ever since then. She is my everything.
Anywho . . . now you know what keeps me sane in this mad, hectic world of ours. I think it's important to keep busy, and to enjoy life to the fullest.
