About me:
from the latest issue....
People in the automotive industry are always trying to do it big. They want to get recognized . . . they want to get sponsored . . . get nationally recognized . . . they want to one-up the next guy . . . get on the Discovery Channel; they want to be “big timers” in what they do. But sometimes all the hype in the industry gets played the hell out. What about all the people just out there doing their thing?? In my opinion . . . those guys are the “realest” people in our culture.
Case in point: Team RPM and the whole ImportsNC crew.
These guys are mostly all out of North Carolina. They’re very social and well organized, and they really do a good job of supporting the tuner lifestyle in their state.
A little while back, they decided to put together an event called Import Fashion. Basically, what they did was go to a bar/club, and get permission to set off a part of the parking lot for show and race cars. Then at around midnight – they had a sport compact influenced fashion show in the middle of the club. Then we all kept drinking until 3am or so. Pretty cool right?
The next afternoon, they were supposed to have put together a drive around town. But I don’t know if that ever happened because a lot of people were hungover . . . and we personally had to dip and come back to ATL because Cody was driving and he drives slowly. Unless he’s driving sideways.
The turnout wasn’t necessarily in the thousands.
Import fashion probably won’t be able to push its way into big feature in the mag.
But we had a frickin damn good time hanging out.
And that’s what it’s all about.
Anyway – I guess what I’m thinking is this:
We appreciate everyone out there supporting the hell out of the sport compact culture . . . in the different teams, different styles, different cities, different states, and different parts of the country.
We love to see the scene at this underground level, because this is where the really wicked stuff is. The corporate events have corporate cars with corporate dollars in them – and that’s always cool, but it’s not always real. Sometime it gets a little played.
You guys are the ones in the same city day after day.
I know that most of you that read and support this mag are totally driven by your passion for the industry. I know that when most of you put these events together, you’re not thinking “profit”.
You’re thinking, “Wouldn’t it be cool if . . . “.
And that’s how it oughta be.
See – you guys are the ones who are out there BUILDING this culture. I know you might feel bummed, cause the stuff you do gets overlooked by the mags and such . . . but it doesn’t.
Take the Import Fashion show. It ain’t gonna make it in the mag. It wasn’t “big” enough. BUT – it was a big part of the inspiration behind this issue. The local movements.
