About me: Located on Marshall University's Campus in Huntington,WV; We are a small, yet dedicated group of students who have formed this organization for the purpose of raising awareness within the Marshall community about the suffering and exploitation of animals. We will work towards positive change in the way animals are viewed and treated in our society through pro-active campaigns. Goals: (1) We want to educate and encourage others to live more compassionately by promoting a plant-based diet. Approximately 20 billion land and marine animals are killed EVERY YEAR for food- this is far more numbers than animals killed in labs, or by hunters, fur ranches, or any other industry combined!!! (2) Abolish Dissection. If we cannot persuade MU to stop this practice altogther we will work towards getting a Student Choice Policy implemented on campus. This policy would be for any student who does not wish to perform dissection/vivisection due to their religious or ethical beliefs.(this has the potential to save thousands of lives annually) This policy will protect student's rights, and guarantee they will be given effective and humane alternatives; and will not be penalized.

Events: Dogs Deserve Better 2009 Chain-Off, Sunday June 28th at Ritter Park in downtown Huntington. We will be chaining ourselves for at least 8 hours beginning at 10:30am to raise awareness and funds for chained/penned dogs. All members of the community are welcome and encouraged to join us! For 30 years, Jan Haagensen has been harassed and her farm in PA invaded with impunity by hunters, and her NO HUNTING signs and fences repeatedly torn down. 10 years ago, she had had enough, and approached the trespassing hunters to ask them to leave, and asked a hunter engaged in illegal hunting to cease and desist. When a hunter threatened to shoot her and her mother, she called police, which sided chummily with the hunters, and later charged her with 5 counts of "hunter harassment". The "kangaroo court" convicted her on all 5 counts. Being an attorney, she appealed to the appellate court and won, and is now challenging the PA Hunter Harassment Statute in federal court as being unconstitutional for inhibiting free speech and violating property rights. If she wins, doors will be open for challenging the equally unconstitutional Hunter Harassment laws of other states.

Dr. Hershaft is a prominent leader of the animal rights movement, and the creator and chair of the world's largest, highest respected and longest running (17 so far) Animal Rights National Conference - this year in Los Angeles, July 16-20 (see www.ARConference.org). He is the founder of the Vegetarian Information Service in 1976 and the Farm Animals Reform Movement (FARM) in 1982.
