    Silvermander's Interests
GeneralWearing clothes that make people's heads turn, designing and sewing said clothing, designing and making jewelry, breeding rats and talking to my cat, watching cartoons, going to SCA events, being barefoot, playing with (other people's) kids, ink, chains and zippers, RPG tabletop gaming, spikes, black eyeliner and lots of glitter, fishnets and big boots, doing things to make the locals shake their heads, playing neopets, writing (novels {young adult, horror, scifi, romance} and comic books), reading (horror, scifi, supernatural romance, young adult), eating (Chinese, seafood, lemon deserts, bread & cheese, bread & hummus, lobster {hey, I'm from Maine!}, anything decadent or piquant), researching novel ideas (yes, I really enjoy researching), traveling (I love Mexico {not the touristy areas, I mean real Mexico}, Savannah, GA, Florida - especially the Keys {would love to move back there, the only place I really want to live other than Maine}, and I want to go to - Ireland, New Zealand, Japan, Italy, France {Paris during fashion week}, London, Scotland, and anyplace else I'm not picky), guns (especially my 38 revolver, Humphrey), going to the range.
MusicWith music I'm willing to try anything once. I do have to admit that I'm kinda stuck in the 80's. I love all the stuff they played on the radio back then, and just haven't been able to outgrow it. I guess I'm getting old - Isn't a sign of getting old is not understanding that new-fangled music? Well, that's me right now. I like some new stuff, but only bits and pieces. It makes me feel old, but I don't mind. I also like certain country music as well as classic rock.
Movies10th Kingdom, Breakfast Club, Thing Called Love, Where The Heart Is, Now And Then, IT, The Stand, Harry Potter 1,2,3,4&5, Run Lola Run, Thinner (I have a bunch of friends in it), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Pollyanna, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Pleasantville, Shawshank Redemption, The Craft (for it's sheer daftness), Practical Magic (the movie was actually MUCH better than the book), Parent Trap 1&2 (though the original was better), Nightmare Before Christmas (and the shorts Vincent and Frankenweenie), Rocky Horror (137 times), Princess Bride, Schindler's List, Bye Bye Birdie, Ever After - And many more, but I'll shut up now!
Television

- Wrestling, wrestling, wrestling!!!

- RAW, Smackdown!, ECW, TNA, Midget Wrestling

- Cartoons, any and all!

- Little House On The Prairie - My newest thing to watch during the day.

- Star Trek - I prefer Voyager, but like TGN and TOS. Not a big DS9 fan.

- Degrassi - Prefer the old, but will watch the new.

- Law & Order - SVU is my fave, but I also like the original, CI and Trial by Jury, basically I love them all!

- Mythbusters, How It's Made, Ninja Warrior and lots of other TLC & Discovery shows.

- Charmed & Buffy, I'm also getting into Angel lately.

- Some reality TV - I like Survivor, Big Brother, American Idol, Fear Factor, Ultimate Fighter, Beauty And The Geek, Joe Shmoe Show, and others with interesting ideas - I don't like the old boring Real World type stuff, there needs to be controversy, conflict and challenges.

Books

Anything by Spider Robinson. His Callahan books are my favorites, but the rest are great too.

Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series.

Kim Harrison's new series is wonderful. It's similar to Hamilton's Blake series, but even better. I'm itching for new books to come out.

Tracy Briery's vampire books.

All of the OZ (as in Dorothy and the Wizard) books.

Stephen King - hey, I love horror and I'm from Maine!

Now And Forever and Hunter's Arrow by Lori Libby She's a good friend and a Wed. Night Writers member.

Wicked, and Tales of an Ugly Stepsister, by Maguire. He made me reevaluate how I look at the "bad" characters in Cinderella and Wizard Of Oz. Can't wait to read more of his books.

Anything by Christopher Moore - his books are fabulous. He does a lot of research and is incredibly funny. Run (don't walk) to the closest bookstore and buy as many of his books as you can afford, then get the rest from the library!

Stranger In A Strange Land, by Heinlein. Many people say he had a Mary Sue obsession in his writing, but I haven't read enough of his work yet to see it.

Anything by Katie MacAlister - It's romance but has either a supernatural bent or an obscure setting. I've read most of her books and will be totally lost when I finish them all.

Jennifer Crusie is someone new I'm adding to my list. I really enjoy her romances. They have adventure and great female leads. I can't wait to read more!

Sue Grafton's alphabet books are new to me too. I'm not normally into mysteries, just not my thing. I picked up one of her books at the library one day because her books had been glaring at me from every bookstore and library shelf. I got it home and started, not expecting much because it wasn't my genre. I loved it. I have since read all but three of the books she has out. I'm going to be very upset when I finish 'S' as I will then have to wait for her to finish and publish the rest. I'm not good at waiting - especially for new books in a series.

Anything supernatural - like vampires (I write about them myself), were-any-things, witches (Wiccans and the fantasy kind).

I do like scifi, but don't like fantasy, much.

I've started reading some chicklit and some romance. I recently read books by Dorothy Samuels and Annie Flannigan, both authors are good. Mameve Medwed also has a great chicklit book out.

I read as much young adult as I can stomach. I write that genre and figure I should read it, but most of it sucks so bad it makes me angsty. I'm trying to learn from other author's mistakes. That probably means I'll never get my manuscript accepted if it shuns what's being published these days, but I have to be true to myself. But I do enjoy Cynthia Voight, Isobel Bird, Eva Ibbotson, JK, Richard Peck and Jenny Carroll to name a few off the top of my head.

HeroesAnyone who dreams their dreams with their whole hearts - then works with all their might to make them come true. And my mom - she's such a strong lady.

About me:

Hi, I'm Kendra, but most people call me Ken. I live in Maine and grew up in Maine, but spent a couple years in other places on the eastern seaboard while married to my now estranged husband. I went to college for fashion design, but don't work in that field professionally as I am disabled.

I do make clothes for myself, both for everyday wear and for SCA events. If you don't know, the SCA is the Society for Creative Anachronisms. It's basically medieval re-enactment. It's a lot of fun and a great way to dress up in interesting clothes and get away from the world. I have learned so much about so many interesting things. Every summer I go to the Great Northeastern War, it's always a wild weekend.

About me everyday? I spend a lot of my time writing. I write young adult fiction with a horror bent to it and adult romance. I also write weekly reports for a website. Basically it's a play by play and review of WWE RAW on Monday nights. Hey, it doesn't pay much, but it looks good on my writing resume. If you want to read it, go to www.rajah.com. I don't claim to be great, but it keeps me busy since I can't work.

Every November I am involved in NaNoWriMo. It's an online challenge to write a 50K word novel in 30 days. '08 will be my sixth year doing it and I have finish more than 50K words each of the previous five years. This year will be my forth year as a NaNo Municipal Liaison. Basically it's like trying to herd cats. I get as many of the local nano writers together for parties, hand holding, write-ins, therapy sessions and celebrations. If you write at all please check out www.nanowrimo.org

Last year NaNo started a new challenge. Last June was the first ever Script Frenzy. It's a challenge to write a 20K word script (screen or stage) in 30 days. Most of us (published and unpublished) novelists had never written a script before. It's a lot of fun. I'm also the local ML for this. It was crazy and scary but I'm psyched that I got in on the first year of this. Please, check out SF at www.scriptfrenzy.org

Well my shaved hair is growing back again. While I loved all the little kids running around GNEW 2006 looking for the exploded Furby (my hair was pink when we shave it in the middle of the SCA event), I doubt I'll be drastically cutting it any time soon. I'm really glad I had both a mohawk and shaved my head, but now I'm really wanting my hair back. I got hot this past summer and wanted to shave it again, but I managed to make it through without resorting to the clippers. It's growing out, but I still have a long chunk in the front that was part of my mohawk - It's hot pink. It's a cut little bob right now, but I want piggy tails again damn it!

Usually I dress kind of 80's punk. I spent too many years dressing the way other people thought I should. College I was finding myself, and too busy to explore. While married and the boyfriend after, my clothing was tightly controlled. My ex-husband had to approve my clothes if we were going to be anywhere his friends would be - It was disgusting! Now I'm dressing the way I want and everyone else be damned. I feel so free to be me. I just wish I could afford to get all the tattoos I want. Any local artist who's willing to help me out with this? *grin*

And now for something completely different. I have Crohn's Disease. I'm always interested in talking to others who have it. I've had it for over 27 years and willing to answer questions from people who are newly diagnosed. And that's all I'm going to say about that.

I have a big fat orange tabby cat. He's actually a Hemmingway cat that I got when I was living in the Florida Keys. His name is Kapok and does everything possible to show me how much he loves me. As soon as I walk in the door he's screaming and yelling his love. At night he has to sleep on my hip or chest. 24 pounds of cat makes it hard to breath when he's on your chest. I love him dearly and I owe a lot to him. He kept me sane while I was married. Since then I promised him I'd do everything in my power to give him the best life he can possibly have. I think I've lived up to that. I baby him terribly, but that doesn't mean he gets everything he wants. He'd love to go outside, but I know it's too dangerous for him.

Since I originally wrote this I moved in with my boyfriend and his three kids that he has 99% custody of. The boys (2) are teenagers and the little girl is 5. If that's not enough to make a household crazy enough, there's four cats (Kapok being one of them) and a dog. Kapok is joined by Piggey Cuddles was here before I got here. She's a beautiful white chubby cat with grey swirls on her head and the last half of her tail. She's none too bright. Most of the time she's extremely sweet, but sometimes that one insane braincell kicks in and she goes crazy - claws and teeth out - for no apparent reason. Jules Verne is under a year old. He's a long haired orange fuzz ball with huge hands and feet. He isn't completely double pawed, but he does have extra fingers and toes. He's our little home improvement specialist. Whenever we're doing anything around the house, he has to inspect and be involved. He's so inquisitive about how things are built and what you're doing to things. Twiddles, formally known as Twilight, is just a baby. He was born the middle of August and brought to us unannounced by the middle child. He was upset and brought home a kitten. We were not thrilled, but it was a blessing in diguise. He's become bast friends with Jules and they play constantly. Twiddles has really given Jules something to do and a lot of fun. They're alway playing hard and enjoying each other. Brady is the dog and what a big dog he is. He's 92lbs of neurotic Briard. He's a pure bred dog, but as he does not get along with other dogs he could not be bred and showing was hard. He did win a couple of awards when he was young, but his attitude made it so the breeders/showers could not keep him. He came to live with the family I now call my own. While he's a sweet loveable lump, he really is an emotional mess. He's afraid of the oven, the Dremmel, the drill, bells other than the ones on the cats' collars, the vacuum and anything that clicks or beeps. He is a total spaz. When he's not freaking out he tries to herd you. As long as you push back and don't let him push you into a corner or onto the sofa, you're fine. If you let him herd you once, he will contantly do it. The first time I met him I pushed back and have had very little trouble since. We're also planning on adding a couple of rats into the household mix. Yes, we're a little crazy, but we love critters and they know I love ratties. Just today we finished setting up the rat cage and shelving for the cage. It's very high, so as the cats (hopefully) cannot bother them. But, just in case the cats have some wild ideas, I have bungie corded the cage down to the shelf! We pushed the cage around as if we had paws and it only went so far an slid back. So I feel safe. The cage is completely set up, right down to water bottle and bedding - just need ratties!

- I also try to live by a rule I made for myself many years ago...

Never regret the things you've done, only the things you've dared not do.

- It's hard to do sometimes, but it helps me keep some perspective on life and reminds me to live my life to it's fullest.

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more inexplicable.

...There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

Who I'd like to meet:

My estranged husband in divorce court. I was served with papers, my lawyer responded, but he never responded to my lawyer from there. It seems as though he got a divorce in absentia. The thing is that it isn't legal as I did respond. I'm trying to get copies of the divorce decree so I can follow up from there. If things are as I expect, it's not legal and he's a bigamist.

I'd love to meet a few people who are dead - Dorothy Parker, Eleanor Roosevelt and both of my grandfathers and my great grandmother Rachael. I'd also like to meet certain fashion designers, most pro wrestlers working today and some from the past.

If you want to be my friend and I don't already know you, please send me an email so I can find out who you are and what you're about. Otherwise I will not respond. I hate to have to do this, but I'm getting a lot of requests from people who just want to build their numbers or are not interested in getting to know me. So please, think about it first, and send me an email if you are someone I don't already know.
