The space between a dwarf star and a dwarf mouse may at times seem vast and unavigable. Truly it is inhabited both by glaciers and gibbons, brassieres and butter, but the distance can most certainly be closed. Here is the key: Safe Boating Is No Accident. At times a simple admonition to our aquatic sojourners, but most recently a folk band with all the answers. Turn your head slightly as a bemused canine, and listen closely to their call: "Cosmic Questions Answered! Aches and Pains Surrounded and Forced to Succumb!" Our machines may not kill fascists as efficiently as our forefathers, Guthrie, Dylan, and Seeger, but what we can offer is a warm handshake and a kind invitation to absorb the rhythms of the universe. Amidst guitars, stand-up bass, clarinet, and the light brushing of snare that great distance dividing supernovas and rodents may not seem so far removed. Formed in 2008 after a day at the lake spent listening to the vibrations of the vast and undulating sky.
GUYS! The Westword said some nice stuff about us!
"We don’t know if the members of this quartet were imagining what it must have been like to be inside Noah’s head as he built the Ark, or if they were having a private giggle at the cosmic joke of the journeys of Odysseus following the Trojan War. Whatever inspired their moniker, Safe Boating Is No Accident (due at the Meadowlark on Thursday, February 26) sounds a bit like George Gershwin trying his hand at indie folk with a little help from Lou Reed and Pete Seeger. Gentle rhythms and filigrees of clarinet characterize the outfit’s songs, yet none of its material seems the product of mellowed sensibilities. Leighton Peterson’s easygoing vocals are deceptively relaxing, because there’s something inherently subversive and sly about his delivery. Safe boating is indeed no accident, and neither is this band’s rustic charm."
