About me: What would you do if there was another city wide blackout? Or a flash flood covers Manhattan? Or another Blizzard with snow 4 to 6 feet high? Fire in your office building, apartment building or school? Remember 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina? Both emergencies one man made, the other was an force of nature. We can be better prepared.... Think about it.
None of us want to think about this stuff at all. However.... When these things happens, we should be ready. A friend of mine and I are working on a Documentary Film on Public Safety in New York City. I have learned a lot from the research and interviews we have done. I would like to share some of this very fundamential things we all can do to make us ready for a real emergency.
Who I'd like to meet: Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has a great readiness program called Ready New York. Check it out and let me know you thoughts. Even if you don't live in NYC, you can still use this imformation. Be well and stay smart....

Special Action Alert:
City's Bike Safety Efforts Are Not Enough
City Hall Rally to Demand New Safety Plan to Address Chronic Hazards
TOMORROW MORNING
Thursday, June 29, 2006
8:30 am
City Hall
In the past three weeks there were four serious bike crashes in New
York City, three of them resulting in the deaths of individual cyclists,
Donna Goodson, Dr. Carl Nacht and Derek Lake.
All four crashes were caused by dangerous conditions that are
commonplace on New York City streets but should not be: drivers and passengers
opening car doors into the path of cyclists; drivers failing to yield to
cyclists and hazardous street conditions that can send bikes out of
control.
Call on Mayor Bloomberg to get serious about making New York City a
safe place to bike. It is the City's job to install protected bike lanes
and greenway paths and ticket speeding drivers and double parkers.
Cyclists can't do this. The City must!

Body: George called yesterday, in the hospital again........
They've ruled out meningitis thank goodness!
I'm trusting he'll be out in a few days (again).
Take a minute to hear me out because my pal the prolific writer George Tabb and others
need help! I'm not only talking about the immediate financial assistance (though that is needed) I'm talking about standing up for them. Anybody who admires George's books or columns or his bands (or never heard of the guy but thinks it sucks that thousands of
good people are getting a raw deal) please get involved in some way, in any way,
because this means a lot to him (DUH)! Not just his own health. Help George get better
so he can become one of the strong advocates for the others in this whole freaking mess. He's always done benefits for cancer, aids, helped champion many causes, well, this
is what's on the front burner.
And please send some good energy with the power of your thoughts George's way
so he can get out of the hospital soon!

Hurricane Evacuation Plans For NYC Areas
With Many Storms Expected, City Prepping For Worst
(CBS/AP) NEW YORK
As hurricane season approaches, city officials are updating evacuation plans and scheduling drills to test their tactics, the emergency management commissioner said Thursday.
Next month, senior-level officials at the police and fire departments, transit agencies and others will stage a tabletop drill. Later in the summer, they plan a field exercise, Commissioner Joseph Bruno told the City Council during a budget hearing.
The simulations are designed to teach officials to make quick decisions about how and when to evacuate certain areas of New York, with particular focus on special-needs populations like hospitals and nursing homes, said Jarrod Bernstein, a spokesman for the Office of Emergency Management.

Eye Of The Storm: Understanding Hurricanes
During the field drill, officials plan to set up an evacuation center and several shelters to test how the facilities might operate when deluged with people. City employees will most likely play the roles of the hurricane victims and evacuees.
In a real hurricane, authorities would open dozens of evacuation centers and hundreds of shelters citywide.
The city's highest-risk zones include lower Manhattan, Brooklyn's Coney Island, the Rockaways in Queens and the perimeter of Staten Island. Officials say 30-foot-high storm surges could drown those areas during a major storm.
The most recent major hurricane in the area was Gloria in September 1985. It caused thousands of people to evacuate their homes on waterfront areas.
Among the worst in city history came in 1938. The storm, known as the Long Island Express in the days before hurricanes received official names, was responsible for more than 600 deaths
