Safety Neal's Interests
|
| General | I'm a curious person by nature and I have lots of interests. I'll start generally and get more specific.
I consider myself a citizen of the world. I love America, but I want America to act as a responsible and progressive nation. International law, economics, microfinance, environmental protection, international intellectual property are all issues that I have strong opinions about. For instance, I think George W. Bush is the worst president ever and I hope he stands trial as a war criminal in the International Criminal Court. He has also violated the U.S. Constitution several times. He should also be impeached and imprisoned by the U.S. Justice system (such as it is) for allowing systematic torture of foreign nationals.
I often think about abstractions that can be depressing such as Hubbert's Peak Oil Hypothesis, nuclear war, bioterrorism, and the prospects of the collapse of civilization. I'm actually fairly chipper in person, but there are few topics that I am not willing to entertain, no matter how sinister the subject matter.
I think recombinant DNA technology is the coolest technology ever. I am also interested in philosophy (mainly ethical and political philsophy) history, politics, public policy, information theory and topics such as privacy, secrecy, the semantic web, and e-networking.
As a former criminal defense attorney I enjoy learning about the sociology of crime and ways to improve the criminal justice system while respecting the rights of (generally) law-abiding Americans.
On a more personal level, I enjoy canoeing, biking, camping and video games (especially first person shooters and role-playing games).
With my free time I like to read science fiction, explore, and ponder the meaning of life.
Two really cool organizations that I'd like to applaud are Men Can Stop Rape (MCSR) and the Grameen Foundation. MCSR is a great organization that I volunteered with for two years in Washington DC that is really saavy about talking to young men about how to build healthy interpersonal relationships.
The Grameen Bank has been instrumental in helping people in developing countries develop businesses through the use of microcredit and microinsurance and other banking services.
