From the outside, playing in a band may seem like all fun and games, but any real band can attest to the fact that you have to deal with a whole bunch of crap before getting to the top. But for Safety Word Orange to deal with constant line up changes, moving across the country, scam artists trying to steal money and a hurricane that flooded their practice space, it just seems rather excessive for only one year! Never the less, they continued on.
It hasn’t even been a full year since Safety Word Orange left Los Angeles to bring their pop-rock sound to Richmond, VA, but it didn’t take long for them to find their place in the scene and continue to build what they started out west. In 2008 they were named Indie Artist of the Year by Music Emissions who said, “Safety Word Orange has a great start here. They have the ability to write Power Pop songs that have a feel good vibe.”
Safety Word Orange began when front man James Mason met guitarist Robbie Rusbuldt in LA in late 2007. A few months later they recorded their debut Self-Titled EP and began their search for a more permanent line-up. So the Craigslist stalking began. The first addition was guitarist Jackson Wise who also brought along childhood friend and drummer Spencer Mallinson. Finishing off Safety Word Orange is bassist Reid Taylor.
In December of this year, SWO will be recording their second record at Red Wire Audio with producer Bryan Russell (Straylight Run, The Academy Is…) The record is expected to be released in spring 2010.
"Safety Word Orange has a great start here. An ability to write PowerPop songs that have a feel good vibe gives them the opportunity to make a strong following. Definitely a band that will grow with the maturation process." - Dennis Scanland (Music Emissions)
"Safety Word Orange has a clean and marketable modern rock sound with the perfect amount of mid-90’s influence sprinkled throughout their seamless self titled EP. These southern boys from Virginia wanted to make a quick stamp on the industry and this EP is the right way to start." - Brian Campbell (DC AtHome)
"Their stark mid-90's pop rock feel is a welcome addition to today's scene oft-filled with carbon copy bands. With Adema's Ed Feris behind the mixing board of their debut EP, expect a shiny coat of unyielding rock sheen, laden with as much musicianship as you can handle. In all likelihood, SWO are one of the best bands you have never heard of" - Starpulse.com
