About me: Who We Are
The Safiya Bukhari – Albert ‘Nuh’ Washington Foundation is a non-profit, grant making organization whose Committee, Advisory Board, and Board of Directors are all individuals who have come together to provide assistance to numerous groups and families who work on behalf of Political Prisoners. Additionally, we provide similar services to the families and survivors of Political Prisoners/Prisoners of War and activists who have died in service of working to educate and improve our community.
Safiya Bukhari and Albert ‘Nuh’ Washington were both Political Prisoners and noted members of the Original Black Panther Party, who selflessly sacrificed their lives for self-determination and the ultimate liberation of Black and oppressed people; thus it is in their names that this organization is dedicated to, as we continue the work that they have started.
Our Mission
The Mission of the Safiya-Nuh Foundation is:. Issue grants that will provide funding, assistance and any other resources that are needed to support the families, projects, legal campaigns and the well-being of Political Prisoners
Our Goal
The Foundation’s Primary Goal are: to continue the work and carry on the legacy of Safiya Bukhari and Albert ‘Nuh’ Washington and other ancestors who worked vigorously to liberate and educate the people in our community, to be looked upon as a positive vanguard-type organization, as we try to enhance the cultural, educational, & environmental programs in our community, to be positive and influential force in the lives of the youth of our communities, who represents the future of our society.
Our Purpose
Political Prisoners and Prisoners of War have, historically, suffered, and even, died from neglect and having inadequate medical attention or treatment while being held captive in United States Prisons. The Safiya Bukhari-Albert 'Nuh' Washington Foundation feels that by providing financial assistance and support will help the families and supporters of these Political Prisoners/P.O.W.'s see to it that they receive the proper and much-needed health assistance and material needs.
The Janet Cyril Justice Fund have been established in order to assist Political Prisoners and P.O.W. supporters and families in providing those who are held captive with much-needed commissary access, and to assist in securing adequate medical services for their loved ones..
The Safiya Bukhari-Albert 'Nuh' Foundation provides financial assistance and support to community projects that are initiated by the families and friends of fallen freedom fighters.
The Bashir Hameed Project was established by the children and grandchildren of the Original Black Panther Party (OBPP).
Using a concept that was first initiated by former Black Panther Party member Bashir Hameed, the Project seeks to secure and establish an Urban Youth Retreat Camp, which will be based on traditional Afrikan, Native-American, and Asian beliefs.
The Camp's primary objective will be to successfully bring "at-risk" urban youth through a "Rites of Passage Program," which is designed to provide these youth with the necessary tools to avoid the traps and pitfalls that are in our communities, and not become a victim of the United States Prison Industrial Complex. Its purpose is to also destroy the 'self-hatred mentality' the beholds many youth in our community, and build up their self-esteem, in order to make them believe and achieve their goals and dreams.
The Safiya Bukhari-Albert 'Nuh' Washington Foundation has established a Speakers and Information Bureau in order to conduct lectures and training workshops for colleges & community programs in the inner-city.
The Foundation's Speakers Bureau consists of many distinguished speakers, who were activists and former political prisoners in the Black Liberation era during the 1960s and 1970s. The speakers discuss a variety of subjects, from the history of the Black Liberation Struggle, to life as a Political Prisoner and/or Prisoner of War. The primary goal is to educate the people about the pros and cons of the movement, and motivate them to continue the struggle.

On Sunday, September 21st, the New York City Police Department, in a reckless and outrageous expression of police abuse, senselessly attacked the New Black Panther Party’s contingent in the highly regarded annual Harlem Day Parade. The incident resulted in five members of the Party being arrested and several officers sustaining injuries.
The appears to have been set off by the unwarranted pushing of a Panther who was doing nothing more than keeping his contingent in line as they were marching in formation up 135th Street by a police officer. The behavior of the police infuriated participants and spectators alike and could have easily degenerated into a full-fledged riot where scores of people could have been hurt on both sides. The five Panthers arrested, whom the community is now calling the ‘Harlem 5,’ are now facing charges ranging from disorderly conduct to assaulting a police officer.
“This is the third time, the third year in a row that there’s been a problem with the police,” said Shaka Shakur, the chairman of the Harlem community. “And the way it happened makes me think that someone in their ranks gave an order to try and start something.”
Some have observed that there was something excessive in the scope and presence of the police at that part of the parade. Reminding many of the senseless police attack on the epic Million Youth March, some felt that the “police were priming for something like this to happen.”
The incident is believed to have been recorded on videotape. The party has secured legal counsel for those arrested and are hosting a community critical review of the incident at their next weekly meeting this coming Sunday and a speak out on the streets immediately afterwards.
Florence and family will notify us of burial arrangements.

BASHIR HAMEED was born and raised in New Jersey. In 1968, Bashir Hameed joined the Black Panther Party while residing in Oakland CA. Once he returned to New Jersey, he became Deputy Chairman of the New Jersey Chapter of BPP. FBI documents obtained during the 70's reveal that during this time Bashir became a COINTELPRO target. He was charged and convicted of the murder and the attempted murder of two police officers in April 1981. This conviction came as a direct result of his political activity. Bashir Hameed and his co-defendant, Abdul Majid were tried three times (Queens Two). Their first trial ended in a hung jury divided along racial lines, The second trial was declared a mistrial by the judge immediately after the jury rendered a decision that acquitted Bashir on the murder charge. At a third trial, they were eventually convicted for murder. Bashir was serving a sentence of 25 years to life, and recently suffered with pancreatic cancer. Also, according to a recent speech given by former POW Bro. Dhoruba Bin-Wahad, Bro. Hameed had at one point served as Sis. Assata Shakur's bodyguard. .. --> / message -->.. --> sig -->

Autum Ashante' gets a standing ovation at the united nations!!!!!
8-13-08 5th Annual U.N. Youth Assembly
Autum Ashante has a gift for tweaking emotion.
This time the provocative little word-smith went straight for the heart. This time she found a way to take the anguish and anger of every child that's ever been raped, abused or neglected, and drive it stake-like into the heart of anyone within earshot.
It was World Youth Day at 44th street and 1st avenue in New York. Speeches, songs and power-point presentations reaffirmed what everyone already knew. The insane arrogance of man is predisposed but in no way limited to aggression. The best of the worst are debauched.
No one spoke. No one coughed. No one sneezed. All eyes were fixed on this most unlikely little messenger. And when she was through, they stood and applauded. They cheered the little girl that had just invaded the core of their humanity and re-introduced them to the cathartic motivator we call shame. No one uttered a word for at least 3 minutes, I'm talking complete silence!!!!
