The Sahotas originally started performing Asian classical music called ‘Ghazals’ during their academic years together. The Head of their School Music Department ‘John Biddulph’ soon realised the brothers’ musical potential and entered them in the ‘National Festival of Youth’ to represent their secondary school ‘Valley Park’ in Wolverhampton, which resulted in them winning the festival and being one of the two acts chosen to perform at the school prom's in 1987 which were held at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
At this early stage of their musical career there were only three members, ‘Surjit Sahota’ on vocals, ‘Mukhtar Sahota’ on keyboards, and ‘Raj Sahota’ on Tabla. They recorded their first album, 'Giddha Pao' in their school summer holiday's, which led onto signing a recording agreement. A further two members joined the band, ‘Kesh Sahota’ on Drums, and ‘Vijay Sahota’ on Keyboards, to complete the band for regular live performances at Bhangra shows across the country. This established them as UK’s first ‘Bhangra boy band’.
The Sahotas went on to release many hit albums and EPs, and appeared on a number of television shows including, Cilla Black’s ‘Surprise Surprise’ and ‘Blue Peter’. During the rise and popularity of the Sahotas they were approached by Miles Copeland of ‘I.R.S Records’ a mainstream Record Company, who were keen to see the Sahotas crossover into the Western Music Industry. They released a single 'Out of Reach' which was followed by the ‘Right Time’ album breaking into the mainstream top 100. This was closely followed by a nation-wide tour with top reggae band ‘Aswad’.
