When the four piece rock band known as St. Leroy and the Martyrs arrive on stage, they bring an innovative, high-spirited sound that identifies with fans of all genres. Growing up with the 1990’s alternative rock crowd, St. Leroy and the Martyrs were influenced by bands such as Radiohead, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Primus, Tool, Soul Coughing, Sublime and The Eels. However, their rock solid roots often lead them back to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix.
Founder and lead singer Joe Schaffner started writing songs when he was 15 years old with bassist and back-up vocalist Eric Braden. Since that time, the two have been inseparable, devoting their lives to perfecting a variety of fun, upbeat and sometimes heart-wrenching songs. Their passion for music and strong desire to perform led to the recruitment of drummer Andy Day, who has performed in various bands since he was 14 years old. Day brought his veteran status and fiery passion for drums to the band. The team was made complete with the joining of lead guitarist Bert Hone. Bert finalized the band’s overall sound while adding unconventional concepts along with classic rock tones to the music. Although Bert is the newest and youngest member of the crew, his distinctive guitar stylings bring a gritty, soul-grabbing sound to the stage.
St. Leroy and the Martyrs are an original band but they also perform covers from Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones and a blistering rendition of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison.” But it is their original tunes that keep the fans coming and the dance floors crowded, with neurotic love songs such as, “Prom Night” and “Hold Me Down.” The intensity of their live shows and the purity of their music have captured the attention of a large local following. A recently recorded CD will be available at live shows.
