Saint Vitus is a label of electronic music established in Geneva and founded by Marc Meylan (Dj Muck). Graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Geneva, Marc Meylan's practice was always linked to music. The particularity of Saint Vitus Records is based on the fact that it was born from a serial of drawings of "musical illustrations". A kind of music called from image. Unlike many labels of which illustration founds an almost decorative function, Saint Vitus Records was born from a rich imagery, becoming the result of a visual work. SVR's music keeps essential to the existence of the label giving a fundamental background to the image giving as result the birth of a "Saint Vitus Spirit". This imagery combined with the SV musical productions results in a special atmosphere highly conceptually linked with the middle Ages. In fact, Saint Vitus is a historical figure that actually existed. We can find historical traces referring to meetings or groups of people that used to give themselves to dances free of any social convention, in the limits of the shamanistic trance. Terrified by those crazy dancers (some of them would pass away from dancing), the Christians invoked Saint Guy (Saint Vitus in Latin) to protect the dancers. With the improvement of science, we can affirm today that these dancers with uncontrollable movements had to absorb – involuntarily – "l'ergot de seigle" (a kind of mushroom naturally developed from cereals, as well as the active principle of LSD). SVR weaves a link throughout the ages and reminds that trance and dancing – in the middle of the techno phenomenon for the past 20 years – have always existed, and that the search for exteriorization through dancing, the body pleasure in the music, and the access to the extraordinary conscience, has no time. The drawings of Saint Vitus Records are masked in engravings. They are actually ink drawings on silkscreen layers. They are constructed with simple power relationships like symbols, theatricality and black and white, just like a kind of popular imagery. All of this represents a blink to all contemporary techniques of music production (sampling, assisted computer production) because only the mediums have changed. Therefore, while respecting the personality of each one of the musicians represented by SVR, the music produced always reminds us of the typical sonorities of Saint Vitus' era: flutes, bells, skin percussions, and all sonorities made out of instruments of wood and bones.
