Science Fiction and Fantasy, reading, writing, and gaming. Suspense/thrillers...reading. I've tried to write suspense before and simply ended up with fantasy noir. Entertaining, perhaps, but not what I was looking for. Politics, particularly that of the populist or liberal variety. I guess I just believe people are basically good, and that the more you know, the more tolerance you have for different viewpoints.

Right now I'm really into symphonic power metal, like Nightwish, Epica, Amberian Dawn, Nemesea, Within Temptation, After Forever, Leaves' Eyes, and Tarja. Oh, and Kamelot, who aren't part of the whole European and Scandinavian symphonic movement, but totally kick ass with their progressive power metal. Frankly, most American "rock" of recent years leaves me cold, with only a few exceptions. And don't even get me started on what they're calling "metal" here in America these days. I can live with the death metal growls in some of the European symphonic metal as a counterpoint to the operatic beauty of the female vocalists, but any of the bands that emphasize that style above all others can go blow themselves. I don't get the point of "singers" who can't sing. The closest thing out of America to these bands I've quickly grown to love is Evanescence, though I have to say that the first album more reflects this style than does their second album. My tastes are fairly eclectic otherwise. I like everything from Peter Tosh and Bob Marley to so-called "pop tarts" like Pink and Christina Aguilera. I respect talent. Oh, and as far as the Nightwish goes, I happen to like BOTH Tarja and Anette for different reasons. Tarja's operatic soprano is so pure and ethereal it nearly brings tears to my eyes, but Anette's mezzo-soprano brings a rock edge to the band that I can't help but appreciate...

Anything with, preferably, a mix of sci-fi or fantasy, humor, action, and drama. Ghostbusters, Serenity, The Princess Bride, Harry Potter, LOTR, Big Trouble in Little China, and Twilight, to name a few.

They canceled the best show ever on TV at the end of the first season. I'm talking about Firefly, probably the best show ever. I was also a huge fan of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, which had its ups and downs, but was still a damn good show they ended on a perfect note. On the other hand, I thought the ending of Angel was damned pathetic. Frinking network suits. Another great show that ended before its time was Farscape. These days I watch a host of shows (I have a DVR), including all the CSIs, Heroes, Medium, Ghost Whisperer, Boston Legal, Life, Fringe, Criminal Minds, Bones, NCIS, House, Blood Ties (I'm still pissed that they canceled it, to be honest), Army Wives, (to my surprise, Lifetime has actually done something that defies the "woman in danger" theme that seemed to be its reason for existence for the longest time, and (on the premium channels), TrueBlood. I also love the new Doctor Who and MI-5 from BBC America.
