Sala Especial “Stereo Hi-Fi”

"With only a few years of existence, the group managed to call attention and quickly earned a number of fans - among them Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier, who, when in Brazil, revealed: "This is the band I would like to have playing at my wedding". And the best is that, after two hyped and sought after demo-tapes, Aventuras Estereofônicas Vol. 1 e 2 (Stereophonic Adventures Vol. 1 & 2), Sala Especial is now releasing, on Bizarre Records, its phonographic debut. The release is only an Extended Play, it is true, but it gives a good sample of the good-tempered instrumental work made by the Cunha brothers and his cohorts.
Created in 1997, the band came out of the yearning of the brothers André Luiz (Organ) and Mauro Cesar (Bass) to play the music made by people like Bacharach, Booker T. e Serge Gainsbourg in the sixties. Without vocals (because they were really bad at it, according to themselves) and taking inspiration in the suggestive name of an old pornochanchada (a kind of comic/erotic Brazilian b-movie) TV session, the group gained the new young and talented members Fernando Gonçalves (drums), Davi Luís (persuasive percussion), Elói Silvestre (effects of sound and images) and soon after Pedro Bizelli (guitars). The following year they released their two demo-tapes (the first one, by the way, completely homemade), which rapidly sold out. Sala Especial’s fame also spread very quickly, so much that they were invited to support respectable international attractions, like Man Or Astroman?, Stereolab and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion when they played in Brazil.
The first year of the new century brought two surprises: first the reformulation, with an exchange of members (Fernando, Davi and Elói were out, Samuel Frade and Gustavo Detmmer at drums and percussions, respectively, were in) and, now, the EP. Eponymous, the first record of Sala Especial (which could easily be called Digital Adventures Vol. 1) features four instrumental themes, which will do well at parties as much as at more intimate moments. The first track, "Interlagos 75", pays homage to the late pilot José Carlos Pace and evokes those amazing soundtracks of the Brazilian TV shows and films made by Marcos Valle in the seventies; "Oscilator Island" promotes a mix of elevator bossa nova with phaser and the space-age pop of Juan Esquivel; "All Transistor" registers a genuine Sæma organ along with electronic effects; while "Orbital Fuzz" reflects the boys’ tastes for Italian soundtracks and garage rock."

"Com poucos anos de carreira, o grupo conseguiu chamar a atenção rapidamente e angariou vários fãs – entre eles, a vocalista do Stereolab, Laetitia Sadier, que, em sua passagem pelo Brasil em 2000, revelou: "Esta é a banda que eu gostaria que tocasse no meu casamento". E o melhor é que, após duas badaladas e disputadas fitas demo (Aventuras Estereofônicas Vol. 1 e 2), o Sala Especial promoveu, pela Bizarre Records, o seu debut discográfico. Apenas um EP, é verdade, mas dá uma boa amostra do bem-humorado trabalho instrumental feito pelos irmãos Cunha e seus companheiros..."
Criada em 1997, a banda surgiu da vontade dos irmãos André (Orgão) e Mauro Cunha (baixo) de tocar músicas da década de 60 de gente feito Bacharach, Booker T. e Serge Gainsbourg. Dispensando os vocais (porque eram muito ruins, segundo eles) e se inspirando em uma antiga sessão de pornochanchadas da TV Record para criar o sugestivo nome, o grupo foi acrescido dos jovens talentos de Fernando Gonçalves (bateria), Davi Luís (percussão persuasiva), Elói Silvestre (efeitos sonoros e visuais) e logo depois por Pedro Bizelli (guitarra). No ano seguinte, lançaram suas duas fitas demo (a primeira, por sinal, feita em casa) que se esgotaram rapidamente. A fama do Sala também se alastrou velozmente, tanto que já foram convidados para abrir shows de consideráveis atrações internacionais, como o Man Or Astroman?, Stereolab e Jon Spencer Blues Explosion..."
O ano de 2001 reservou duas surpresas: primeiro a reformulação com a troca de integrantes (saíram Fernando, Davi e Elói e entraram Samuel Frade e Gustavo Detmmer na bateria e percussão, respectivamente) e, agora, o CD. Homônimo, o primeiro disco do Sala Especial (que bem poderia se chamar Aventuras Digitais Vol. 1) traz quatro variados temas instrumentais, que funcionarão bem tanto em ocasiões festivas como em momentos mais intimistas. O primeiro, "Interlagos 75", homenageia o saudoso piloto José Carlos Pace e evoca aquelas sensacionais trilhas de novelas e filmes criadas por Marcos Valle nos anos 70; "Oscilator Island" promove uma cruza de bossa nova de churrascaria com phaser e o spage-age pop de Juan Esquivel; "All Transistor" registra um genuíno orgão Sæma ao lado de arcaicos efeitos eletrônicos; enquanto "Orbital Fuzz" reflete o gosto dos rapazes por trilhas italianas e rock de garagem...."
