"A Sammy Thing"
Its for the kids. Come out and Support. Together we can unite and help the children in need.
As you may or may not already know, I have spent the summer interning for GABRIELA Network, a women's solidarity mass organization. Over the summer, we have been holding a film screening series unveiling the heinous acts of sex trafficking and human trafficking. Each intern has been responsible for holding her own film screening, and now, the time has finally come for mine. =)
With this, I am asking that you please come support me at my screening on Thursday, September 18, 2008 in the city of Long Beach because I am both nervous and excited for this event! I will be screening "Water," a more hopeful and inspiring film than some of the others that we have shown, which tells the profoundly moving story of Chuyia, an Indian girl married and widowed at eight years old, who is sent away to a home where Hindu widows must live in penitence. Chuyia's feisty presence deeply affects the other residents, forcing each to confront their faith and society's prejudices.
There are over 34 million widows in India according to the 2001 census. many continue to live in conditions of social, economic and cultural deprivation as prescribed 2000 years ago by the sacred tets of Manu.
I encourage you all to come out and learn a little bit more about an issue that is not often talked about, and also to learn a little bit more about a different culture!
Thank you very much for your time! =)
