Salvatore Froio has packed a lot into his life thus far, spending time as a boxer, waiter, restaurant
manager, tailor, business owner, model, producer, theater founder, and club owner, all on the way
to finding his true calling as an actor and comedian.
Born in Montauro Catanzaro, Italy, a small fishing village across from Sicily, Sal relocated to
Worcester, Massachusetts at the age of 8. With few friends and a language barrier, Sal spent his
days at the Ionic Avenue Boys Club where he would discover his lifelong passion for boxing.
There he met his mentor, coach Carlos Garcia, who in time introduced him to boxing legend
Marvelous Marvin Hagler, with whom Sal had the privilege of training with.
After a stint as a restaurant manager, Sal worked as a model in Milan and New York. He hated
modeling, but fell in love with New York and in particular, the famed Greenwich Village, a place he
would one day make his permanent home.
As a model, he also developed an interest in clothing manufacturing, and at the tender age of 20
started as a tailor’s apprentice. In traditional Sal style, within two years he owned his own very
successful tailoring business, but discovered that the stifling corporate world was not for him. After
ten years, Sal closed his thriving business and began to pursue full time his true dream and
aspiration, acting. Soon he was studying in New York with Tony award-winning actor and Dean of
Yale Drama, Lloyd Richards.
Sal quickly became a working actor, starring in stage productions such as John Patrick Shanley’s
Italian American Reconciliation and Shakespeare’s Richard III. He also became a familiar face on
television’s daytime soap operas, numerous commercials and in indie films. He also produce three North American Tours for " The Catanzaro Symphony Orcherstra" from Soverato, Italy. The orchestra performed in every major city in the US and Canada.
Through acting, Sal rediscovered his natural Italian-born ability as a storyteller, and the same
dedication that he put into acting Sal now brings to his career as a comedian. As the owner of Sal’
s Comedy Hole in New York, formerly the heralded Tribeca Comedy Basement, Sal spends seven
nights a week sharing humorous stories of his very colorful life. Throughout the United States and
Europe, he also performs his one-man show, Sex, No Lies and a Big Wheel Tour, his winding and
eventful journey from Italian fishing village to his beloved Greenwich Village.
Sal is currently the executive producer and director of ComedyNet: a new comedy channel. After taking a year off from standup he is now back on stage seven nights a week.
