  • Thanksgiving spent with raccoons and coyotes (Pt. 2)

So there was three and now there are two. Still in shaken nervousness and utter disbelief, I decided to migrate to my front yard with a few friends of mine. We must have been out there for a good hour just listening to music. With Le Loup soundtracking the passing time, we heard what sounded like chewing and crunching. I grabbed a flashlight and had a look... sure enough it was the two remaining raccoons dipping into the dog food I had at the side of the house to throw out.

My dog died about a year and a half ago by coyote as well. Now keep in mind, the dog food was kept in a five gallon bucket nearly filled to the top with dog food and sealed tightly with a snap. The two raccoons managed to open the bucket and feast amongst themselves. Despite the previous mishap, it was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Two raccoons grabbing food out of a bucket with their tiny hands and stuffing their mouths simply staring at me.

Photos were taken... I will post them soon.

The funniest part of it all... is that they returned the night after Thanksgiving, and I expect them to return again tonight. So I will be outside with my flashlight and a fitting soundtrack for the night... it's looking a little like "Metallic Falcons" So raccoon watching to Metallic Falcons. Want to see some raccoons? Then come my way.
  • Thanksgiving spent with raccoons and coyotes (Pt. 1)

So... It was Thanksgiving. Nothing special until earlier this evening in my backyard. Now my backyard is a gold mine to your friendly neighborhood raccoon for some particular reason, perhaps the abundance of fruit. I usually see my guavas and pomegranates partially partaken, but tonight was a completely different story.

I was sitting in my backyard enjoying a drink and absorbing the cool moist air. I noticed a raccoon creeping on the fence separating my backyard from the sectional shrubbery. Out of boyhood courage and curiosity, I threw a few chips onto the lawn in hopes the raccoon would come closer. Seconds later another raccoon wobbles out of the sectional shrubbery. Now with two raccoons snooping around, I sit quietly and patiently. One raccoon is adamant about the pomegranates, but fails once again. He slowly discovers his path towards my lawn where I threw the chips. He snacks as I edge in for a closer look, but of course I startle this hungry creature.

I sat back down and carried on simply enjoying the weather. I would like to say it was no later than 4 minutes... the raccoons found their way back into my yard from the side of the house through a separation in the wooden fence. I am literally three feet away from the two hungry raccoons. They eat the chips as I watch... and to be quite honest, I was a bit nervous. I wasn't sure if they'd overtake me and attack me of my chips. Seconds after the nervousness passes. As I slowly stood up to catch a better glance, the two little thieves scurry back through the hole they created in the fence.

I went inside to put a few things away and to grab another drink with the intention of returning to the seat in my backyard. I reclaim my seat and continue to enjoy the weather. In a distance you are able to hear somebody rolling their garbage cans back into their backyard. This noise, or at least the noise that I had thought it to be continued for several more minutes. I thought it to be a bit unusual. After a few more minutes of the supposed sound of a neighbor rolling their garbage can back into their home, the noise became abnormally close. The bushes start rustling and cracking. Now just as this is happening, a raccoon comes back snooping by the fence separating my backyard from the shrubbery. Literally in a matter of seconds I hear a healthy snarl in a stride of attack.

The area I live in is known to provide mass hunting ground for coyotes. So obviously this sweet hungry raccoon became a hearty Thanksgiving feast for this prowling coyote.
