Nashville-based artist and Wrensong Publishing writer, Sally Barris, has managed to be successful in the mainstream world of country music without giving up her folk & Celtic roots.
Her unique style, influenced by artists such as: Dolores Keane, Tony Rice, Dougie Maclean, Triona Ni Dhomhnaill & Richard Thompson, is what makes her stand out in a city known for “cookie cutter” talent. Whether in her own hands or those of a well-established artist, such as, Lee Ann Womack, or a newcomer like American Idol finalist, Kellie Pickler, Sally’s music is unmistakably recognizable.
Some catalog highlights include: “Reluctant Daughter” (Martina McBride), “Some Things I Know” (Lee Ann Womack), “I’m On My Way” (Kellie Pickler), “The Innocent Years” (Kathy Mattea) and “Honesuckle Sweet” (Jessi Alexander) which appeared in the Miramax film An Unfinished Life.
The Minnesota native is currently in the studio working on her 3rd album, a collection she’s referring to as “songs from the Celtic woman”. "My first love is folk music, especially folk songs from the U.K.”, she says. “After touring solo for years in England, I felt it was high time to start being who I really am – a folk singer!” Look for Restless Soul available Nov. 2007.
Also available: Little Voice (2004) and Reluctant Daughter (1999).
Restless Soul is such a beautiful song. I can't imagine anyone singing it more beautifully. That's an interesting dynamic in many great songs...that innate connection between the song and the artist that seems to express for that person alone...
Sally, I keep finding myself coming back here to listen to your songs. I think this is about the 7th time. I just love your voice and I'm sorry for comparing you so directly to SC. I'm sure that's not exactly what you would like. You are very much your own artist with a distinct and original feel. You share depth with SC that I love. A penchant for expressing the subtleties of heartache, loss and regret...perhaps. One thing I wanted to say is that the lyric "I hate the ocean" is brilliant because of how you sing it...few people could make a lyric like that so compelling...it is very beautiful and poignant. Did I dream about you singing about Vermont? You must have sung that one live in Kerrville? I looked for you there in the booth at least twice but never did see you. I regret it now that I didn't find you. I would love to have met you. I've often wished that SC would sing songs with this lush femininity that you convey so you fulfill a deep longing for me in that respect...you are just a great artist. I'll be watching/listening closely. Love, Shep
Hi again Sally, I wrote this poem a few hours after seeing/hearing you and realized now that I was affected by your songs about the sailor and drowning so I thought I'd share it with you... Love, Shep
Time Knows You Well Shawn Colvin
It's a knot I don't know that ties me to you I pick at it and marvel at its mystic ways
but it's a knot I'll never solve it's woven through my soul and it binds my heart
I sailed the sea many a year and I learned them all stood watch with silent tear saw the height of the sky
and plumbed the depth of the fall I fell through heaven all tangled in this twine thought you'd hear me call
I thought you were mine but now I am drowning and I'll never be free from a knot you know so well
but won't show me this is my fate I know as this dream fills my lungs for your love is my gate
perhaps you stood guard and I was too late to relieve you my dear now I'm bound
and you shed not a tear so be it my love time don't ask why cause it already knows
the color of your sky and the scent of your rose time knows you well and knows it can't tell
Thank you for the add. I will be anxious to hear what so many are talking about in re of your music. It sounds pretty awesome! Take care, God Bless! ~String
Hi Sally, I caught your show at Kerrville and was thoroughly smitten. Your songs are gorgeous. I know I'm not the first to say you sound so much like Shawn Colvin...I literally had to get to the front row and stare at you to convince myself it wasn't her....you look quite a bit like SC too...a treat for me for sure. Loved that sad song about the lover drowning in front of you in Vermont...given that I have Vermont plates on my car! I wrote about you and posted a picture at: wordpress. com/blackshepherd If it doesn't come up just google blackshepherd and kerrville Love, Shep What I especially liked about your singing is the softness mixed with that smoky/breathy sound and the obvious connection to your faith...I'm a big fan...
Any Central Florida dates (Tampabay) for you this year? Just saw Pierce Pettis in St. Augustine... I'm in St. Petersburg (parents were north Georgians) jmt

Sally, You were awesome at the Bluebird last night! I just love your voice and your songs! So excited for you! Can't wait to catch up some time next week! Cheers, Jamie
I've seen you twice at the Bluebird, once at Radio Cafe, once at Cafe Caffeine, and twice at 2 different churches. Tonight's performance was the best I've seen. You were at the top of your game. Great songs, great vocals, and a great venue with wonderful people who understood the concept that music is to be heard and actually listened to. You were brilliant! I was blessed to be there.
