Sounds Like
"Sally Murray sometimes makes her guitar sound like a harp. Originally from Nottingham, she's relocated to Manchester where her multi-layered, left-field new-folk and unconventional kaleodoscopic melodies should find many friends amongst the city's outposts of such, Mushaboom and Red Deer Club and the like. There's a distinctly psycedelic side to it - a male friend, whose name I didn't catch, sits alongside her, variously making space noises on an analogue synth, whooshing cymbal flourishes or rushes of percussion. She finishes the set alone, standing at a piano; eclectic and individual she's like a homespun Feist, and Nottingham's loss is Manchester's gain."

Recorded almost entirely on borrowed equipment in a south Manchester bedsit, Sally Murray’s
debut four track release captures her highly personal and ambitious approach to songwriting and is
a thing of raw, strange beauty.
The Nottingham–born singer’s effortless performances are brought to life by her rich, low voice
which is shot through with East Midlands grit, that on this recording, is multi-tracked and up front,
commanding the listener’s attention. Alongside her vocals are bowed & detuned guitars, analogue
synthesizers, lap steel, e-bow, drums and old 70’s home organs.
While her music isn’t in thrall to any particular artist or genre, some would maybe cite the sounds
of Feist, PJ Harvey and Bert Jansch as possible musical heros of Sally’s though stylistically this mini-
album blends a wide scope of influences including acapella township gospel, lo-fi indie grunge,
Sixties psychedelia and bare acoustic balladry.
Sally has been writing songs from a very early age - her first ever song was about a supernova ready
to explode and destroy the earth written when she was five years old - and in recent years she has
built up a loyal following in her hometown.
Since re-locating to Manchester she has played a handful of shows and is gaining a fearsome live
reputation. Gigs around the UK are being planned for the autumn months including the In The City
festival in October.

Hiya, went really well thanks, I got an encore! Really need to work on my stage presence though hehe! There should be pics soon, will let you know... Congrats on forthcoming landladyness, fantastic news! Will have to sort out coming up to see you soon... Hope all's well
Ah, thanks for that, looks a nice bunch of events they put on... Oh yes, Front and Follow is the label run by Justin who I keep mentioning but always forgetting to write down!
Hehe, was the most fun part of the evening having our natterings! Let me know when you're down again, always good to see you... My room is relatively leaf free now, just the waves to finish off...! Hope all's good with you...
Svarte Greiner (Deaf Center/Miasmah/Type) explores deep into a dark, mysterious and disturbing universe. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Earth, Volcano the Bear, David Darling & Deathprod, the music is draped in Lynchian mysticism and horror film cinematics. "The music of Svarte Greiner is practically perfect. It's like that sound in our heads we've been imagining for ages but had never actually heard." - Type Records.
The Sight Below (Rafael Anton Irisarri/Miasmah/Immune) draws as much on modern genre progenitors like Brian Eno, Robin Guthrie and My Bloody Valentine as it does from the more historic traditions in neo-classicism from Erik Satie and Olivier Messiaen. His album Glider has appeared on Thom Yorke's radar in making the Radiohead's lynchpin's top ten playlist.
His debut album Navigare soon to feature on the Miasmah label, Simon Scott (former Slowdive) is set to be a household name in conceptual music. Simon is the former Slowdive drummer, co-producer of Televise, producer of Seavault, and owner of KESH Recordings label.
And if that's not your cup of tea, how about a UK exclusive show with Tyla and The Dogs D'amour on Saturday 6th June, as part of the UKs' premier sleaze & glam clubnight Wildside's 6th birthday celebrations!
Please note, this is NOT a solo or acoustic show, but a full electric set featuring all their classic songs!
Support from Silverjet, Union X & Dead Sensation!
Then not only one, but two clubnights until the early hours- Wildside and Maximum Overdrive!
Ooh, spooky, small world indeed...! That should be fine about June 4th but it's the same night as Recluse so I can't make it to see you :( Will email anyhoo to sort logistics hehe!
Hooray for Sally, what a lovely gig last week! Mum got the pics back yesterday (old skool camera), will have to scan them in to send you... Also, apparently we have uncannily similar painting styles!
P.S. I just spied that you did a gig with a band called Owl Service. I read the book that they've taken their name from when I was little, I'm sure it's a Welsh book. There is a useless piece of information for you. Boom. x
Oh Tiny, it's only 19 days till I leave. I am excited but have nothing sorted. I really hope you and boyo will be able to visit. I miss you both so much. x x x
Machinefabriek is amongst the finest experimental/electronic artists of today. His ultra-prolific back catalogue showcases his ability to perfect classical ambience, organic drone soundscapes, electronic minimalism and cathartic noise. He is hailed as one of the most interesting new experimental musicians by the Wire magazine.
Xela is the shady, underworld atmospheres and improv horrors of John Twells, owner of Type Records. "Xela has always been able to pre-empt the shifting tides of electronic music and deliver a statement that's definitively of its time” (Boomkat).
His debut album Navigare soon to feature on the Miasmah label, Simon Scott is set to be a household name in conceptual music. Simon is the former Slowdive drummer, co-producer of Televise, producer of Seavault, and owner of KESH Recordings label.
I play a Tanglewood TW47B guitar - I love it. I also play a tenor guitar, which is on a couple of my dodgy recordings! The tenor guitar is great to fingerpick though. Thanks for the really kind words though :)
I've only just started out playing on my own, and haven't moved beyind the Loughborough area yet. Manchester would be great.
