From the mouth of Salvador Dali:

“At the age of six I wanted to be a cook. At seven I wanted to be Napoleon. And my ambition has been growing steadily ever since.”
Salvador Dalí: The Secret Life, prologue p. 1

“My audience mustn't know whether I'm spoofing or being serious; and likewise, I mustn't know either.”
Conversations with Dalí, Alain Bosquet, p. 69

“The true painter must be able, with the most usual things, to have the most unusual ideas.”
50 Secrets of Magic Craftsmanship, Salvador Dalí, p.120

“The only difference between a madman and myself is that I am not mad!”
Salvador Dalí: Diary of a Genius, (1952), p. 7

“... my painting is like an iceberg where only a tenth of its volume is visible.”
Louis Pauwels (with Salvador Dalí): The Passions According to Dalí
Trans. Eleanor R. Morse (St. Petersburg, Salvador Dalí Museum, 1985), p. 77

“The fact that I myself, at the moment of painting, do not understand my own pictures does not mean that these pictures have no meaning; On the contrary, their meaning is so profound, complex, coherent and involuntary that it escapes the most simple analysis of logical intuition.”
Conquest of the Irrational, Salvador Dalí, p. 12

As an artist, Salvador Dali was not limited to a particular style or media. The body of his work, from early impressionist paintings through transitional surrealist art and into his classical period, reveals a constantly growing and evolving artist.

Dali worked in all media, leaving behind a wealth of oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, graphics, sculptures, films, photographs, performance pieces, jewels and objects of all description.

Equally important, he left for posterity the encouragement to explore all aspects of one’s life and to give these aspects artistic expression.

Dali's matchless insight and symbolic complexity are apparent whether he was working from pure inspiration or on a commissioned illustration. Above all, Dali was a superb draftsman. His excellence as a creative artist will always set a standard for the art of the twentieth century.

"Don’t start talking to me about taste. About good taste. Oh, no! Bad taste is the most creative thing there is. Or rather, it overcomes everything else. Take Gaudi, for instance. With him there’s no question of taste, just a creative power which inundates everything, overwhelms it. So-called good taste weakens the creative force.”

Dalí on Tour Traveling Exhibition Perfect for temporary display in libraries, conference rooms, and waiting and common rooms, "Dalí on Tour" is a poster exhibition of 31 reproductions of works from the museum’s permanent collection.

Each image is beautifully framed under glass with labeling incorporated into the matting, and is accompanied by a museum-style wall placard giving informative and intriguing notes about the work.

A Self-Guided Tour Booklet accompanies the exhibit and leads visitors through the fascinating panorama of Dalí’s life and work. "Dalí on Tour" is free on loan with your paid shipping and handling.

"DalíVision" Outreach Program If your group or organization can’t visit the museum, then please consider inviting the museum to visit you. With a little advance notice - and with no cost to you - the museum can schedule a trained docent to visit with slides or posters to best suit your needs.

Museum docents regularly visit senior groups, churches, convalescent homes, social and service clubs in Pinellas, Pasco, Hillsborough, Manatee and Sarasota counties.

Depending on availability, our docents can also make special theme-oriented presentations (for example: Dalí and religion, Dalí and women, Dalí and science, etc).

For more information on supporting or taking part in this program, or to book a docent for your group, please contact the Dali Education Department at (727) 823-3767.

Sponsorships Each year, the Museum sponsors the Best of Show award for the University of South Florida’s student show at the Contemporary Art Museum. The Best-of-Show work is then exhibited at the Dalí Museum.

Each year, in conjunction with the Festival of States, the Suncoasters, and Pinellas County Schools, the Museum sponsors a Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition in North Straub Park in St. Petersburg.

The Museum frequently teams up with local artists and local recreation centers to offer week-long summertime "hands-on" art workshops for underprivileged children in St. Petersburg. Previous themed summer sessions have included "Ornament and Adornment" and "The African Cultural Experience."
