Sam Coble was raised on a commune in Northern California and within its unique ideology he was completely sequestered from the music and culture of America in the 1980's. His early influences consisted solely of The Beatles, John Denver, and the old folk songs his father would quietly strum such as "Red River Valley". This isolation led to a rambunctious rebellion and hunger throughout his teenage years for new and compelling sonic experiences, beginning when he taught himself guitar and bass, studying everything from Nirvana to Pink Floyd to Rush, and continuing with the earnest study of both classical and jazz. At age 14, he and some friends started Sugar Bomb, a punk-pop outfit echoing Weezer, Radiohead and Green Day. Never content with staying inside any defined genre, Sam later played with ska-rockers The Irish Washerwomen at his local high school, and after high school played guitar and trumpet for the west-African Reggae group Maribou where he gained more experience with touring and playing for bigger audiences. Throughout his work with all of these projects, Sam continued to write songs with a wide-range of styles in mind, all infused with longing, love, sorrow, compassion, bitterness, and honesty. Today, his songs are performed mostly on acoustic guitar, leaning more toward simplicity and clarity in expression.
