Sam Cooke was one of the most influential and important soul singers in history -- He was responsible for the invention of Soul music. He was also a popular performer in both the black and white communities. Equally important, he was among the first modern black performers and composers to delve into the business side of the music business. Cooke founded both a record label and a publishing company, as part of his careers as a singer and composer. Despite those business interests didn't prevent him from being engaged in civil rights issues, which paved the way to Cooke's emergence as a star.
