Rob Verheul en Jeff Hijlkema vormen sinds februari 2008 SAMENHANG.
De cd “SAMENHANG” is een compilatie van de opnames die zijn gemaakt tijdens de eerste ontmoeting van Rob en Jeff. Deze ontmoeting werd een twee uur durende intuïtieve Hang-improvisatie. De muziek van SAMENHANG is een verrassende mengeling van herhalende ritmische en melodische patronen. In combinatie met de vriendelijke klankkleur van de Hang is de muziek van Rob en Jeff te ervaren als een muzikale reis met een meditatief, bezinnend en troostend karakter. Of zoals Hangmakers zelf zeggen: “De Hang bewijst dat de mens een ziel heeft…”.
Rob Verheul is percussionist en geluksvogel. Hij geeft workshops op allerlei creatieve gebieden waaronder conga en djembé. Rob bezit een Hang van de 1e en de 3e generatie.
Jeff Hijlkema is muziekdocent in het voortgezet onderwijs, componist en veelzijdig muzikant. Hij bezit een Hang van de 3e generatie.

SAMENHANG is Dutch for ‘being connected’
The music of SAMENHANG is a surprisingly blend of melodic and rhythmic patterns weaving sounds capes. In combination with the warm friendly sound colour of the Hang, one can experience the music of SAMENHANG like a musical journey with a meditative, reflecting and comforting character.
The CD SAMENHANG is a compilation of the recordings that were made during the first contact between Jeff and Rob. This first meeting resulted in a two hours lasting intuitive Hang improvisation.
The Hang players
Jeff Hijlkema is a musical teacher, composer and musician. He owns a 3rd generation Hang.
Rob Verheul is a percussionist and a lucky bird. Besides musician he is also a teacher. He enjoys giving musical lessons in conga, djembé and guitar.
He owns a 1st and a 3rd generation Hang.
The Hang
The Hang (Hand in the dialect of Bern, Switzerland) is a handmade melodic percussion instrument made of metal. It was presented by PANArt from Bern, Switzerland in 2000.The first generation of Hanghang (plural) were made with many different scales and tunings. Later the Hang makers put brass into the metal which gives the Hang a warmer and deeper sound. In 2007 (3rd generation) only four scales were created, hoping hang players could play together more easily.
The Hang has a dominant note on the top called the Ding surrounded by seven notes. At the bottom there is a hole called the Gu, which you could play like an udu.
