Sam's Acting Reel

Sam Ghosh (born January 27, 1984) is an Indian-American actor, director, and screenwriter. In his most recent roles, he portrayed neurotic doctor Raj Krishnan in feature Anything For You, and drafted several of his own characters, including a Bollywood star, a silent protester, and a misunderstood immigrant in Lionsgate’s sketch comedy pilot Extreme Reaction. Anything For You and Extreme Reaction are expected to be released in 2008.

Early Life

Ghosh was born Swamrit Ghosh in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, India to father Ashok Kumar Ghosh, a chemist, and mother Ravi Swarajyam, a stenographer. After moving to the US at six months old, he lived with his family in Buffalo, New York for the first three years of his life, but eventually moved to Wayne, New Jersey.

Ghosh attended Wayne Hills High School and left his mark there as the Drum Major of the marching band and Director of the percussion ensemble. He was recognized with the nationwide symbol of excellence, the John Philip Sousa Award, for his dedication and superior musicianship. He graduated from the school in 2002 and began attending Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey the same year. On campus, Ghosh hosted the largest shows, directed the dance organization Pulse, and produced his own films under his production label 5AM Productions. In the summer of his sophomore year, while serving an internship as a Network/Server Technician, Ghosh decided to try his hand at acting. He read a “how-to” acting book, had a family friend take headshots in a local park, and after work one day, commuted two hours to a casting call in New York City with a self-written monologue. This audition formed Ghosh’s NYC stage debut as the lead role in The South Asian Monologues at Cami Hall and Center Stage NY.

While pursuing a degree in Business and Technology at Stevens, Ghosh trained extensively with Terry Knickerbocker at William Esper Studio. He continued to pursue acting projects, beatboxed with Hindi/English a cappella group NY Masti, and worked as a Production Assistant with some of the biggest names in the Indian film industry (a.k.a. Bollywood) on New York City film sets. Upon graduation, he was offered a high-paying consulting job, but ultimately he declined the offer to pursue his passion for acting full-time.

Career

After dancing in a club alongside Rosario Dawson in This Revolution, being the lead actor in India’s “Prince of Bhangra” Sukhbir’s music video Turn, and having ice cold water splashed on his naked body as the dead brother of a terrorist in The War Within’s deleted scene, Ghosh developed a comedic short about the significant impact something that seems trivial can make. The script eventually became 5AM Productions’ Faith in a Wrapper, acted, produced, directed, and edited by Ghosh, and received the Boken Film Festival Award for Best Film.

Ghosh has been known to choose a wide variety of film roles which suit and represent his stylish and versatile personality, from his portrayal of an Iranian war victim in low budget experimental film The Big Catch, to a bullied homosexual on the courts of Astoria Park, an award-winning short for Outstanding Cast Performance at the Action on Film Festival; from a homicidal photographer in the black and white film Still Image, to a playful, metro-sexual interpretation of Lord Krishna in Saving Hinduism, screened at the Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival with Astoria Park.

Among theatre roles, Ghosh played a drunk, high, sexually repressed Indian male and an obsessed tourist lover in Desipina’s Seven.11 Convenience Theater and a jolly romantic Sikh in Sponsored by Nobody’s Not From Canada, which performed as a part of the New York Fringe Festival. Entry Level, a documentary about Ghosh's acting career along with four other recent college graduates, has been screened at the Asian Pacific American Film Festival in DC. Ghosh has appeared on "CW11 Morning News" as a guest host and has been a regular contributor on "AVS," the infamous Saturday morning Indian version of E! News. Ghosh is the director of the Universal Percussion Ensemble at the National Black Theater and was the voice behind RBC Radio's "Shetal Aur Samrat."

Upcoming Films

Ghosh’s future projects include three shorts, a feature, and a pilot that will debut between 2008 and 2009. In the summer of 2008, he will portray suburbia rap star wannabe Atul (aka A2) in short film Finding Priya a Prom Date. For this film, Ghosh and the writer of the film, Jessie Spellmann, have written a club track for his character which will feature in the prom scene of the film.

At the latter end of 2008 will release supernatural romance thriller Anything For You, Ghosh’s leading debut in a feature film. He will also be seen in Lionsgate’s sketch comedy pilot Extreme Reaction, in which he plays several of his own characters, including Bollywood star Taj Kumar, silent protester Dr. Satya, and misunderstood immigrant Sameer Khan.

Ghosh has recently wrapped production on The Last Son of Saddam, a dramatic short about an Iraq native finding justice for his lost family in the U.S., and Tomorrow, a comedic short about a guy torn between proposing to his girlfriend and heading to Cuba with his best friend to meet hot bongo-playing chicks. The Last Son of Saddam and Tomorrow will be released in early 2009.

Ghosh is currently preparing for his role for a Hindi feature which is expected to be released in 2010.
