I'm originally from Rutland, East Midlands but I’m now living in North London. For the last three years or thereabouts I've been touting my wares at venues around the UK. I've played all over the place alongside some great acts, including Rachel Unthank & The Winterset, Findlay Brown, Lisa Knapp, John Smith, Davey Graham and Spiers & Boden. As I live in London I do a fair few gigs here, but I like to tour as widely as possible. One recent highlight was a gig in Holmfirth, Yorkshire. I went to Sid’s Café, which was used as a location for ‘Last of the Summer Wine’. I ate a scone as big as my face and felt a bit sick. This autumn I'm going on tour with the insanely good and frankly ginormous Bellowhead. Keep an eye on the gig listings for shows near you.
Last summer I took part in a collaborative project with Nitin Sawhney called Aftershock which culminated in a gig at the Royal Festival Hall. As a result of this I've been appointed Emerging Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre. So far this year I've had guitar tuition and all-round sound advice from the wonderful Martin Simpson. I've also been writing and recording new material and rehearsing with other musicians with a view to doing band gigs in the near future. When I’m not working own my on stuff I play with a few other artists including Liam Bailey - who plays with The Accidental and is in the process of making his debut album - and Riz MC, with whom I supported Massive Attack at the Royal Festival Hall in June.
'A killer voice.' Nitin Sawhney
'Sam Carter is a very promising guitarist and songwriter' Eliza Carthy
'Sam has got soul! What a guitarist. And a beautiful story teller.' Luke, Nizlopi
'Sam Carter plays his guitar like a harp.' Time Out
The Guardian's Chris Salmon wrote an article about last year's o2 undiscovered competition. Out of 5000+ entries I was picked for the top 30. "Speaking from bitter experience, it's unlikely you would enjoy wading through all 30, too many of whom think moaning about your boring day over a guitar line makes you the next Arctic Monkeys. There are, though, several acts worth hearing, among them Rutland folkie Sam Carter" Rutland folkie indeed.
Emma Edmonson who writes for Frink Music caught a gig I did as part of the o2 competition: "Sam Carter is my favourite. Having caught him at the Borderline the singer songwriter may come from the same vein as everyone else but there’s more. Jose Gonzalez style guitar playing makes you wonder how he hasn’t got seven fingers instead of five and those oh-so-mourning lyrics make you want to get him a sugary cuppa and give him a cuddle. Awww."
The lovely Folk Radio UK reviewed my EP 'Come Gather Round' and included some of my songs in their playlist: "This guy can make his guitar talk and sing along with him. I had real problems choosing which tracks to play on the station because they are, and I'm not kiding you, exceptional. I've listened to many many artists as you can probably imagine, but you don't get honesty and openness come through very often (I don't pick those ones!), it's hard to explain but there is no bullshit about this guy. What you see is what you get. I like his style, I love his lyrics and he is an exceptional musician."
Incredible finger work and the lyrics of a true modern folk artiste thanks for the listen Mr Carter (self promo bit) Come by and have a listen to my work if you get a chance Cheers , Fin
