Born in the heart of soul music (West Africa) Samuel Brenya, better known as Sammy B, moved to Calgary with his family at a tender age, in an era where Hip Hop was a growing trend amongst the youth in Canada. In his high school days he developed a first hand relationship through his break dance crew, which he dominated, and went on to making beats for local artists at the age of sixteen. By the time he got to college, he was well in tune with the art and his understanding of rhythm and poetry, but something was missing. He had nothing to show for it, and little did he know that his fate was about to change. After meeting college mate, Big Dee (Producer), it was certain that something had to give, the product of this communion being tremendous records we enjoy today.
Over the years his growth in the art has been manifested through intelligent rhyme schemes, choice of beats and substance filled story lines, to mention but a few. Also songs like Addiction and I Need U made it to the semi-finals of the ISC (international song writing competition), and the latest one No Half Steppin earned a spot on the TLA records tribute to Tupac (IN THE SHADOW OF AN ICON). Through the support of Calgary University Radio, BU (Brandon University) radio and Thug Life Army Radio (TLA), it is believed that this is the start of a propaganda to serve listeners of all ages and diverse backgrounds with music that is entertaining yet heart felt, motivational and soothing to the ear.
Given his strong writing ability and unique sound, Sammy B has captivated his audiences in various performances and many a time it is said that he has “stolen the show” during opening acts. It is relevant that vibrance, passion and youth are not short of his repertoire and with these attributes, plus the urge to “preach the truth”; we are witnessing the birth of another icon and leader for today’s generation.
