Sampson and the Folkadelics began as an acoustic trio focusing on dynamic cover tunes drawn from a multitude of genres and with a heavy emphasis on vocal harmony. In December 2006, the planets aligned perfectly, guitarist/vocalist Sam Miller began writing original songs drawing inspiration from our society’s state of affairs to heartbreak, guitarist/vocalist Gavin Cummings, infused with inspiration from the likes of Chris Thile, made the switch to mandolin, and vocalist Lauren Shusterman was added to the group after a spontaneous jam session at an Ayurveda after-party.
The three set to work revamping the group’s existing set of covers and adding a dozen or so original songs, each drawing from a different musical genre. As the band expanded its repertoire they played all categories of venues Ithaca has to offer – house parties, street corners, campuses, campfires, as well the traditional, including The Nines and Castaways. In May of 2007, The group cut its first demo at Ithaca College featuring Rozatones percussionist, Jake Wallack.
The band had originally experimented with various drummers, bassists, and percussionists, and by Summer of 2007 had attracted the talent of drummer Ian Cummings and bassist/jazz guitarist Jon Sandner. With the line-up finalized, the band spent the ensuing months traversing back and forth from the Knitting Factory in NYC through Hudson Valley to New Paltz, and Ithaca.
