Influences
Music mimics the beat of our very own heart. It could be said to be the universal language, a language that we all understand. It moves us...in more ways than one. It brings us together. It makes us feel every emotion, from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. It can take us back to a period of time. It can remind us of memories once past. Music is the drug for the mind that inspires the spirit of the soul. SP
Storyteller or songwriter? Blues, roots or pop? You decide. Sam Page is a Hobart-based musician who spends his time blending catchy grooves with soulful lyrics in the hopes of striking a connection with anyone with a pair of ears.
Times have changed a lot since Sam’s high school days when he first picked up a guitar and tried to make it sing. He’s now no longer content to entertain his mates at parties or hum his tunes alone. A regular on Hobart’s gigging scene, Sam now spends his time in the studio, working late into the night recording his first offering, a self-titled EP to be released later this year.
Despite his love of singing and performing, don’t confuse Sam with some kind of Australian Idol or Popstars contestant – he’s dedicated to producing a quality product, every time.
“I hope that anyone who has a strong connection with their own emotions will be able to take something from my music and use it to relate it to their own life experiences,” he says.
“I believe my songs can strike a chord with people of any age and to anyone who has ever felt times of despair as well as times of happiness. I hope that people will be uplifted in knowing that they are not alone.”
No doubt his music will get inside your head and make you think with songs like the soulful The Only Child or the whimsical Carousel. But also, be prepared to dance and move with driven, upbeat tracks like History.
“Some of the best reactions I have witnessed to my music have been from people who come up after a show and earnestly tell me that they can relate to my music. When people get up and dance, it’s a very good indicator that they are getting into it. I once played one of my songs to over a thousand people who gave me a standing ovation – it was a very humbling experience,” he says.
And don’t expect a half-hearted performance, either.
“I still get nervous before a gig. I am often talking through the lyrics of my songs in my head, but once I start it’s like running a race.
“Once the gun goes off, all nerves take a back seat and it’s all about playing a good show.”
