Thanks- I don't know why I didn't think of jazzbooks.com- it's like 80 dollars per used volume on amazon, so the price difference is pretty marked.
Here's a question for you: I've got some people interested in pretty basic beginning guitar lessons, but they want to learn some theory/music reading stuff. I don't have anything basic enough, other than Chords Galore and a few lead sheets. Can you recommend any good material that I could use at the beginner's level?
I've heard so much about this Howard Roberts compendium but I can't find it anywhere! Is it out of print? Maybe that's what I need to take my playing to the next level ( I kid, but seriously). I've been getting bogged down, for some reason I spend way too much time on stuff I'm already good at. I think I just need to get a plan and stick to it, and practice those things I'm not good at (go figure!) By the way, will you be playing much this summer? I'd love to come out sometime

This Saturday, January 24, 9:30pm, MILTON HOPKINS (9 yrs. with BB King's band and one of the last of the school of "real deal" legends of Texas Rhythm & Blues guitar) & "TEXAS JOHNNY BOY (vocals, harmonica, flute, tenor & alto saxophone) will be in downtown Dallas at a fine club called "PEARL" at 2038 Commerce St, 75201, ph# 214-655-8824. WE'D LOVE TO HAVE YOU AND YER FRIENDS AT THE PARTY!!
You're welcome- I'm telling everyone I know to give it a listen. I'm really enthusiastic about it- the solos by everyone are terrific and the whole disc just swings hard. I already know that I'm going to (or attempt at least) transcribe several of the solos. Just great stuff man.
Hey Sam- I finally bought your cd "Plus One" and I'm really, really digging it! All the tunes sound terrific. Just thought I'd let you know how much I enjoy the cd.
Hey Sam- How's it going? Play much during the break? I meant to try to come out to at least one of the gigs you have posted here but my car fell apart. Go figure!
Saturday Sept. 20th, 9:30pm. Texas Johnny Boy & Milton Hopkins (9 years with BB King's band and a Texas legend of blues guitar) will be in downtown Dallas at "PEARL", 2038 Commerce Street, DALLAS, Texas 75201. We've got all kinds of blues I know all y'all can use! Hope to see y'all at the party! Thanks for the AD, friend. Texas Johnny Boy eclectic bluesician, vocalist, harmonica, flute, saxophone
I hear you- Pat Martino can be a bit much, a bit "dry" sometimes. But he's no doubt a great player, I am baffled beyond all recovery when I look at one of his transcribed solos.Anyway, since writing that blog I've discovered the wonder that is Jim Hall- a gorgeous player. That tone!
The Keith Jarrett Standards stuff (with trio) is really, really good. He's fast becoming one of my favorite pianists.
I've been expanding my musical library quite a bit, so if I added all the new stuff I think is marvelous I would never be done with that blog. It's one of those "leave it where it lies" situations .
