Bio
As a bilingual, British musician of mixed ethnicity, Samy Bishai is often asked which culture, language, and music he feels most at home with. The reality is that, owing to the mixed background he has had the privilege of experiencing, neither side dominates musically. Indeed, he feels that it is precisely because of his background that he has always passionately consumed and performed as many different sounding musics as possible. Having been born in Saudi Arabia, he was raised in Egypt where he had a strict Russian-based classical training while surrounded by the sounds of everything from legends of classical Arabic music and Egyptian pop-music, to Western jazz, rock and heavy metal. And, since coming to the UK - where he has spent the majority of his working life – He has had the opportunity to experience an even wider range of musics, such as electronica, flamenco, and West-African music. Since then, he has worked with a considerably varied number of artists and projects, including the mainstream commercial, e.g Tom Jones, Gwen Stefani and Basement Jaxx; the more ethnocentric, yet culturally diverse, e.g. Asian Dub Foundation, Natacha Atlas, Seckou Keita and Yasmin Levy; jazz e.g Zoe Rahman, Julian Joseph and the F-ire Collective; electronica, e.g Digitonal, and remixing B12; a large number of stylistically diverse acoustic/folk singer-songwriters/bands, e.g. Aquilina, Julia Biel, and Kirsty Hawkshaw. He has also done a large amount of session work on assorted film scores, documentaries, short films and commercial advert music, for both British and non-British television/radio including BBC 1&2, ITV, Channel 4, Radio 1-4, XFM, ResonanzFM, Classic Fm. All those experiences will be fed into new work that reflects the influences of both his personal background and the richly diverse opportunities he has experienced in terms of range of styles of music, musicians, venues, types of performance, studio methods and techniques, and, musical technologies.
