About Mural Program
The Community Mural Program (CMP) is a nationally recognized Mural/Public Art program that strives to identify, train and mobilize artistically inclined youth, adult and elder residents of our community to create murals / public art pieces within this impoverished community. The CMP is based on a crew system where a Laed Muralist / Designer is teamed with 4-6 Hard Core Crew Members. Lead Muralists / Designers are artistically talented community residents or are former Hard Core Crew Members who have gained enough experience to lead there own mural projects. The Hard Core Crew Members are area youth or adults with an interest in art who are recruited through word-of-mouth or at school presentations.
The crew system ensures that the mural project does not solely create murals for “art’s sake”, but teaches community artists the skills necessary to perpetuate this art form throughout their community. The mural process encourages participants of different ages, communities and socio-economic backgrounds to collaborate, develop friendships, and learn from each other while developing their humanistic, life, and art skills. The crew collaborates and works together on all stages of mural planning and preparation. Additional community members may participate in the presentation and painting stages. The mural process ensures that the mural project does not solely create public art spaces, but serves as a tool for fostering human and community development.
The CMP has completed 25 murals and currently has 4 new murals in various phases of the mural process. Through their work with our mural program, participants become encouraged to continue their education after high school. One former mural participant, Rigo Luna, who completed his first mural as a Lead Muralist / Designer while in high school, went on to study at the Pratt Institute of Art & Design in Brooklyn, NY.

About El Placazo
El Placazo Newspaper is one of three projects operated by San Anto Cultural Arts. The purpose of the newspaper is threefold: 1) educate and train youth in all aspects of newspaper production (photography, journalism, computer layout and design, desktop publishing, editing); 2) develop and nurture the artistic, writing and cognitive skills of youth participants; 3) allow for community residents to voice, document and express their creativity, history, social concerns and thoughts through the submission and publication of poetry, articles, and artwork.
El Placazo Community Newspaper is a community-operated, monthly newspaper designed as an educational tool for youth, adult and elder residents interested in realizing and developing skills in all aspects of newspaper production. The newspaper serves as a unique outlet for people of this impoverished area to express themselves, to document their culture, and to work as urban socio-anthropologists. Through their work with EPCN, youth, adults and elders develop self-efficacy / esteem through self-identification and the development of communication and cognitive skill building. The monthly process of EPCN instills positive work ethics and responsibility, and challenges youth, adults, and elders to investigate, uncover and translate both the beauty and the ills that make up this community.
The newspaper is published monthly, has an estimated yearly readership of 96,000 and is distributed to over 320 locations and subscribers in San Antonio, Texas, the US and Mexico. General subscriptions are $15 dollars, and $5 for inmates, upon request.
To become part of the El Placazo Newspaper Program as a youth staff member, a writing, photography or layout/design mentor, or a general volunteer, please contact the interim El Placazo Coordinator, Cristina Ordonez at 226-7466 or cordonez@sananto.org.

About me: Mission Statement:
San Anto Cultural Arts believes that people should have the ability to record their history, culture and heritage through their own words and vision. SACA unearths, affirms, cultivates, and showcases the wonderful talents among the youth, adults and elders of one of San Antonio’s most economically depressed and underserved communities. We believe in providing individuals access to equipment, knowledge, and training in order to express themselves regardless of race, gender, or socio-economic background, so they will have the opportunity to realize their talents, interest and potential. Furthermore, we believe in the perpetuation and self-sufficiency of community cultural arts programs by empowering people with the skills, knowledge, and experience to pass on those skills, knowledge, and experience to others in their communities. It is the mission of the SACA community to provide and create cultural arts programs that aid in the development of the individual and their community.
Who I'd like to meet: About San Anto Cultural Arts
San Anto Cultural Arts (SACA) is a 7 year-old, community-based, cultural arts organization located 2 blocks from the Alazan-Apache Housing Projects. SACA currently operates 3 programs - El Placazo Community Newspaper, Community Mural Program, and the Video Oral History & Documentary Program. In addition, SACA organizes various community events and services. Some of these include: Dia De Los Muertos Community Altar and Procession; Huevos Rancheros Breakfast Gala and Silent Art Auction; Corazon y Familia Mural 5K Run/Walk; Watchales - neighborhood outdoor movie nights; scholarship / financial aid workshops; safe sex / substance abuse dialogue forums; guest speaker round-table discussions; Educational / Cultural Tourist Neighborhood Mural Tours; mural consulting service; Muralist-In-Residence-Project; Teen Mentor Initiative; Por Nuestros Ojos - Cassiano Homes Familia Photo Exhibit.
SACA prides itself as a technical and spiritual learning space that promotes and encourages organic and cultural self-expression. SACA, was established in August of 1993 by a small group of community residents as a project of Inner City Development, Inc. Originally called Inner City Cultural Arts, the organization changed its name when it incorporated in February of 1997 and received 501(c)3 tax status in July of that same year. On July 16th, 1994, the first issue of El Placazo was introduced and our first mural, Educacion, was blessed and dedicated.
SACA is in the middle of a cluster of barrios known as La Tripa, El Con, and Ghost Town. The communities makeup is approximately 97% Mexican-American. Participants are children, teens and adults from our community. We are located in an area of San Antonio where the drop-out rate is as high as 60%, the teen pregnancy rate is the one of the highest in the country, and heroin addiction and prostitution is rampant.
Still, the Westside of San Antonio is an artistic and cultural Mecca. Driving down any alley or street, you will find incredible front yard nichos (altars) which have been created by residents of this community for generations. The Westside is the home and urban birthplace of Conjunto music. On any Saturday night, at the legendary Conjunto nightspot, Lerma’s, you can dance the Taquachito to the accordion sounds of Santiago Jimenez Jr. Feel free to contact us to get information on how to get involved with any of our programs or community initiatives.
