Master of all trades and jack of none, Sancho Gallilei is currently hiding out in the North West Frontier Province of Donegal pursuing free-lance work and his own megalomaniacal creative projects from his base in the mountainous wilds.

For most of the current millennium Sancho was the Director of Arts & Culture at Airfield in Dundrum, Dublin. He earned the respect of both artists and audiences as a passionate curator and jovial host who built up an excellent venue presenting established and up-coming artists. The rich and varied programme featured concerts, exhibitions, readings, theatre and puppetry performances, alongside workshops in the visual arts, writing, drama, music, print, and photography.

Towards the end of the last century he sojourned in Istanbul tutoring in the dramatic arts and working for the Ecumenical Patriarchate of the Orthodox Church, a bona fide Byzantine institution. During this time Sancho was a founding member of the arts collective Firbreaga, he produced festivals and events across all arts genres; theatre, music, dance, film, exhibitions, and community events. Firbreaga shook up the Turkish arts scene. They were the first group to present street theatre productions in the country.

Reviving and renewing oral folklore through physical performance Sancho breathed new life into the storytelling tradition via a dramatic one-man show; Away With The Fairies. He has toured throughout Ireland and performed in Turin, Berlin, Istanbul and Gibraltar.

Away With The Fairies

A dramatic exploration of myths, beliefs and superstitions in the oral traditon

Hotter than a blazing turf fire and livelier than a jig, a sprightly seanchaí comes leaping off the hearthstone onto the stage with a whirlwind performance of wild and witty anecdotes from the celtic-twilight-zone. This shot-gun show rifles through the vivid imagination of our forebears in a country alive with the wee folk. Recounting many tall tales passed down through generations Away With The Fairies illuminates the warm charm, inherent wisdom and simple innocence of these wondrous stories.

This show was inspired by Sancho's grandmother who fervently believed in the good people. Whenever she mentioned anyone ranging from the slightly strange to the completely crazy she would explain their actions by saying that they were away with the fairies. It was a compliment of sorts, paid to fascinating characters who provided a little diversion from the norm.

The performance celebrates the unique humour and exquisite beauty of stories and anecdotes gathered from people in rural Ireland, most of them transcribed over a century ago. Offering a colourful panorama of Irish Folklore many of these stories are found in multitudinous variations not only across the Emerald Isle, but in similar tales told throughout the four corners of the world indicating the universality of human experience and the storytelling tradition.
