Sound And Noise Dictated By Ongoing eXperimentation, one of the mantras used by sandbox trio,
described perfectly the inspiration and intent of the group.
Brought together in 1992 by the common desire to explore new
possibilities of music-making, the band's three members
- Martin Birke, Chuck Ehlis and Daniel Panasenko -
initially used traditional instruments but quickly incorporated
new instruments designed and built by Chuck.
sandbox trio went on to perform and record for the next
8 years until Chuck's untimely death in 2000.
After 3 CDs and 2 film scores (Animals and Heartbeat), the band made its final
appearance during their tour of Germany in October 1998.
The final studio recordings of the band were released in 2004.

Urubamba
2004
The last studio recording picks up where Nocturnalis
leaves off and finds the band exploring territories only
hinted at by their previous releases. New instruments
and new sounds permeate this dark, hour-long
conclusion to the band's body of work.
Nocturnalis
1999
Music created for the night, this hour-long collection
is dark, meditative and thought-provoking.
In addition to the group's unusual mix of percussion
and homemade instruments, this unique recording
features clarinetist Beth Custer.
Idiophone / Orcus Drawl
1997 Idiophone/Orcus Drawl traces the groups first live
sound experiments from 1992 with electronic
percussion, tapes, guitar synth, and alto saxophone
to 1993 when the band began to build it's own
instruments.
Kurumba
1996
Ten songs with a touch of African
influence alternating with strange soundscapes.
Enhanced CD includes sound clips of other
sandbox trio releases and artwork
by Chuck Ehlis.
