  • Bio

After having played in a couple of rock/rock electro bands in Belgium, Sandra Arslanian (piano/vocals) decides in 2009 to concentrate her efforts on sandmoon - indie/folk/s&s/rock band. She is later joined by sandmoonians Tony Abou Haidar (drums) & Elia Monsef (guitar). sandmoon’s songs are mostly tunes to listen with the heart, somewhat soothing, personal and nostalgic; sometimes acoustic and folky, at other times rock or even electro. sandmoon has been selected in various contests in 2009/2010, ie Radio Liban’s Concours ‘Musiques Actuelles’, Puredemo on Belgian national radio Pure FM… and has played in different venues in Lebanon and Belgium. The band has released in Autumn 2010 its first auto-produced album “raW” with the precious help of Fadi Tabbal (the Incompetents, Youmna Saba). Tid bits about sandmoon

About Solitude video: ''This clip with music from Beirut based Sandmoon flits between intimate portraits of solitary figures cut with a dancer having a whale of a time in an old train station. The haunting Gibbons-esque vocals with a synth orchestra and piano are overpoweringly touching.''
in: Time Out Beirut, video nation, July 2011

About the Ruptured Sessions Vol. 3 Compilation: ''Radio Liban's studio, with an eclectic array of local artists who wouldn't usually sit side by side. Not so much a compilation of undiscovered local talents, more a mix of the sturdy favourites of the indy scene with everything from Fareeq el Atrash's hip hop, old skool rock from Lazzy Lung and feminine folk from Sandmoon.''
in: Time Out Beirut, Albums, July 2011

"Indie pop trio Sandmoon – based between Lebanon and Belgium – is a charming lo-fi indie folk and pop ensemble creating music both dreamy and layered in a style that evokes simplicity and beauty.(...) raW is a wonderful introduction to a sound seldom heard by regional artists – and for all of its beauty, sincerity and rawness we welcome that with open arms."

"This indie-folk band has introduced a new brand of local English music to the Lebanese scene with its debut album. Touched by Sandra Arslanian's beautifully haunting voice, the tracks carry the listener through a nostalgic journey of love, heartache, lies, confusion and hopeful dreams of better days. The intimate lyrics are accompanied by alluring melodies that aim straight for the heart, such as the opening track 'Hide Away' - a questioning song about looking back at a younger life."
in: HangOut, Dec-Jan 2011

"Sheherazade video by sandmoon: A low budget video to promote 'Sheherazade', a dreamy tune lifted from their new album 'raW', sandmoon proved you only need a few props (in this case a paper aeroplane, red coat and toy sword) to make a decent video clip. Shot in Antwerp, Belgium, the video was written and filmed by lead singer Sandra Arslanian."
in: Time Out Beirut, video nation, Feb 2011

" The band’s debut album “raW” combines piano interludes with breathy vocals that remind us of unique female artists, such as Beth Orton and Cat Power. Some songs combine electronic beats that add a twist to the group’s folk-ness."

"Un faux air de Moriarty, une ambiance proche de l'Irlande, il ne manque qu'un peu de brume et de vapeurs éthyliques à Sandmoon pour nous emporter loin. La voix est délicate et semble se perdre mais elle dessine la trame avec énormément de rigueur. On croit percevoir quelque chose de simple, mais c'est en grattant qu'on découvre la véritable richesse."
in: PureDemo, review about "Anything Wrong" by JoWell Well (Musiczine), Nov 2010

"Le rock belge de nouveau à la fête ? Pas vraiment, car même s’il a été révélé par un concours organisé par Pure FM, enregistre à Bruxelles et se fait produire chez nous, Sandmoon n’est pas à proprement dire une formation autochtone…."
in: Musiczine, Découvertes by Luc Herpoel, Dec 2010

"Sandra Arslanian's debut album plays like a personal history; each song is a chapter of sun-kissed melancholia. (...) Her voice makes the album - it is extremely expressive and she mellifluously gives life to the words she has penned." ..
in:Time Out, Dec 2010..

"Hide Away opens this album elegantly with nods to the likes of P. J. Harvey going alt-country, the arrangment of the track plunges you straight into the fray, building upon the introduction of each instrument with considerable skill, but it all centres around Sandra Arslanian's vocal, which lends just the right suggestion of defiance to this, ultimately easy-going tune.
Sandra's piano which cropped up on the opening track's choruses to great effect takes a more prominent role on the jazzy country ballad Be With Me, where her voice sways closer to Norah Jones, though on the choruses the hint of emotion just breaking through as she sings 'Allow yourself to love' is what holds this track togther (...)"
in: God is in the TV (webzine), raW album review by Owain Paciuszko, Nov 2010

"Sandmoon avait déjà charmé le public de Zico house il y a quelques semaines avec sa puissante voix mélancolique qui rappelle Tori Amos et Fiona Apple, et vient de sortir son premier album, Raw (Cru)."

"Sandmoon has an uncanny talent of making people think and sing along."
in: Time Out, Aug 2010

"It was with a lot of grace & eloquence that Sandra Arslanian, singer for the group SandMoon, presented each song the band played that night (July 23) at the LAU Theatre Festival. There is something powerful about SandMoon’s music and the crowd was hypnotized, hanging to every word. The band seems down to earth, and Sandra's lyrics were all very touching and sincere."
in: www.shuhra.com, July 2010

"More folk was to be heard over at the Samir Kassir garden with Sandmoon, led by singer and pianist Sandra Arslanian. In spite of the awkwardness of the setting – the stage was perched high above the audience, meaning that performers had to aim their talents downwards – Arslanian’s emotive set was compelling. With a style pitched somewhere between Beth Orton and Laura Marling, Arslanian sang a selection of poignant self-penned compositions."

Hi Sandra!!! How are you??? Just took the time to listen to your new songs!! They're great, as usual!!
