Damian with occasional others. Kirsten does backing vocals on newer songs and plays French Horn on "Incomplete-Incompatable" and Trumpet on new track "Big Idea". The songs on the sandpit CD "acoustic energy to electric power" are Damian's with help and advice from friends - Blair (the L.E.D.s), Gil (ambient composer and engineer), Marcus (the L.E.D.s) and Grant (Grasslands). Sounds Like
"synth-driven rock songs" ... "fuzzy guitars and catchy pop" ... "I liked what I heard." [Simon Sweetman: NZ Musician magazine, October/November 2007]
From Wellington NZ, Sandpit plays a tasty brew of electro-pop and rock, flavoured with analog synth sounds and driven by strong bass lines. Songs are developed in the studio with plenty of digital trickery and a vibe to take you to another place. ------
The sandpit CD "acoustic energy to electric power" is available from CDKiwi.com for just $15NZ. Go to http://www.cdkiwi.com/rockmusic.htm or message us and we will sort you out! ------
Sandpit is working on its second album, to be released in 2010. ------
Handy with a soldering iron, Damian got into music making by building fuzz boxes for friends when he was at school. An untrained musician, Damian played guitar in early ‘90s Christchurch drummachine-guitar-rock-noise band “Swim Everything”. His main role was to make feedback, as he did not know many chords. The band released an EP and an album and was featured on a Flying Nun ‘Freak the Sheep’ compilation. Swim Everything disbanded following Damian’s move to Wellington. Many ill-fated attempts to start a band in Wellington followed…
In Wellington Damian co-founded record label “Wrong Records” releasing the NZ music compilation CD “Dollar Mixture” in 1997, and CDs by a number of artists over the years that followed. Damian wound up Wrong Records in about 2002 to give him time to get back into making his own music. More ill-fated attempts to start a band followed…
Discovering the sonic potential in the world of synthesisers has been a new awakening for Damian. Still without musical training, he has a Kiwi DIY approach to making songs – much like a bloke with a skill-saw building a deck. Sandpit is the result of this experimentation.
Hey - Perfection is well titled. Sounds great! I'm stuck in a small room with just a laptop and tiny speakers and it hammers out nice and Phat. And bounces along like the best of yours. Well done. Like early Human League.
Well I've finally(!!!) finished the album - fill the space - recorded in a Christchurch bedroom. Just a couple of years and a few false starts. No sweat :)
The entire album is available as 192 kbps mp3s for absolutely zilch right now on myspace. Enjoy!
VP is a pretty good song. I'd like to hear a version where you nasty-up the vox a bit (electro, distortion, or just genuine live angst) so that they have the same grit/horror theme as the lyrics and other sounds. Presently you and the BVs might sound a bit too "sweet" for this song.
Just thought I'd tell you that we in Amber Oak have recorded some of our material which is currently available at our myspace. So if you have any spare time, please have a listen and if you want to, you can also download the tracks to your computer.
Any feedback, good or bad, would also be greatly appreciated!
