Sangoma Everett

Bio:

Sangoma Everett started playing drums at the age of twelve. After his first successful experiences in Virginia, his home, encouraged by his family, his teacher and friend Consuela Lee he decided to leave for New York city. There he teemed with bassist and composer Bill Lee and played with the Clifford Jordan Quartet during three years.

He improved at a fast pace and started playing with other great musicians like Barry Harris, Chris Anderson, Murial Winston and Joe Newman. After a stay in Northern Ireland in 1979 with Joe Newman, he settled in Paris France. There he had the opportunity to play regular gigs with Jimmy Forest, Al Grey, Jimmy Smith, Mal Waldron, Horace Parlan, Jimmy Woode, Kirk Lightsey and La Velle. Sangoma toured Africa with Memphis Slim in 1984 and with Dee Daniels in 1986 & 1987. He performed in many festivals throughout Europe. He was an established and successful drummer when he joined Barney Wilen and became a central element in the group together with Riccardo Del Fra, Philippe Petit and Alain Jean-Marie between 1986 & 1989. In the 90s he worked with Eddie Louiss and he lived in Switzerland for a few years.

In 1999 and 2000 he was the Golden Gate Quartet's drummer.

In January 2001, he formed the Sangoma Everett Group with "The Nomads of the Desert."

Meanwhile Sangoma has played with - among the most famous musicians :

Philip Catherine, Dizzy Gillespie, Doudou Gouirand, Donald Harrison, Benny Golson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Maurice Vander, Leon Thomas, Steve Lacy, Erik Truffaz, Tony Lakatos, Linda Hopkins, Jimmy Witherspoon and the DJ Laurent Garnier. He has also performed in many recording sessions a.o. with Barney Wilen, Claude Nougaro or Liz Mc Comb and Jeri Brown.

Sangoma Everett commence à jouer la batterie à l'age de douze ans. Apres une première experience et un succès d'estime en Virginie, d'où il est originaire, il décide de partir a New York en 1977 encouragé par sa famille et son professeur et amie Consuela Lee. Il y rencontre alors le contrebassiste et compositeur Bill Lee, joue avec le Clifford Jordan Quartet avec lequel il travaille avec acharnement pendant trois ans.

La progression est alors très rapide et Sangoma joue avec les musiciens les plus réputés tels que Barry Harris, Chris Anderson, Murial Winston et Joe Newman, il s'installe à Paris. Sangoma signe alors de nombreux contrats avec, entre autres, Jimmy Forest, Al Grey, Jimmy Smith, Mal Waldron, Horace Parlan, Jimmy Woode, Kirk Lightsey, La Velle & Jerome Van Jones, Alberto Malnati et participe de nombreux festivals dans toute l'Europe...

Le succès est alors assuré. Entre 1986 et 1989, Sangoma joue avec Barney Wilen et devient un élément moteur du groupe avec Ricardo Del Fra et Alain Jean-Marie. EN 1999 et 2000, il est le batteur du Golden Gate Quartet.

En janvier 2001, il crée le Sangoma Everett Group avec "Les Nomades du Désert."

Sangoma a également accompagne parmi les plus connus :

Began her journey in her native Norfolk, Virginia performing with her familys gospel group at the age of 6.

Years later, Shawn moved to New York and found herself in the music industry recording with the likes of Jennifer Lopez (On the 6), Marc Anthony (Marc Anthony), Chico De Barge (The Game) and Kenny Lattimore (From The Soul of A Man). She would later provide vocal support on tour of platinium selling artists such as Chaka Khan, Mary J. Blige, Beyonce and Faith Evans to name a few.

"EN PANNE DE SCOOTER", c'est le nom de cette Création imprégnée de Delta Blues et d'Electro façon Detroit impulsée par le batteur américain Sangoma EVERETT pour "A Vaulx Jazz" 2007. Rappelons que Sangoma était déjà là pour la toute première édition, en 1998, aux côtés du saxophoniste Barney Wilen. Le batteur était revenu en 97 en compagnie de Doudou Gouirand et Enrico Rava. Il était également l'invité du festival en 2002 pour un rencontre mémorable avec les Nomades du Désert. Enfin, son trio "EN PANNE DE SCOOTER", prenait ici son premier envol lors de la 20ème édition du Festival "A Vaulx Jazz". "L'idée de base de cette aventure en deux roues avec Corey et Carl est de présenter l'émotion du blues authentique dans une approche inédite et contemporaine...". Si le blues fait naturellement partie de l'histoire du batteur (Sangoma est un natif du Sud, de Norfolk, Virginie.). Il n'est est pas de même pour la musique électronique. Initié par Laurent Garnier, (Sangoma joue et chante sur l'album "The Cloud Making Machine" de Garnier, en 2005), ce parcours initiatique continue aujourd'hui avec Carl CRAIG; le pape de l'electro de Détroit. La Cité de la Musique à Paris recevait en octobre dernier la création "Versus" présentée par Carl Craig, par le chef François-Xavier Roth et l'ensemble Les Siècles. Au programme : Steve Reich, Bruno Mantovani et six pièces de Carl Craig. Auteur d'une techno en constante mutation, Carl fut l'un des premiers à enrichir le genre en conjuguant electro, jazz, classique et contemporain, improvisation et composition. Everett et Craig mettent donc de leur complicité au service du blues et de la voix atypiques, empreints d'Afrique (voir "From Mississipi to Mali", le film dont Corey est le sujet principal.) du chanteur et du guitariste Corey HARRIS. La Création 2007 du projet en mars 2007 en simple trio, se prolonge aujourd'hui avec la parution d'un ALBUM enregistré aux USA et présenté en exclusivité pour le festival ! Le trio de base est cette fois épaulé par un clavier (Kevin Sholar) et un bassiste (Damon Warmack), tous deux présents sur l'album. Empreinte d'electro, d'afrobeat, d'effluves reggae ou soul et d'un blues métisse façon Taj Mahal, la musique originale d'"En Panne de Scooter" ne manque pas de carburant... ..
