The complete history of Sanguis et Cinis
From birth to death and beyond...
From 1989 to 1993 Eve Evangel™ had the idea of forming a band under the name "Sanguis et Cinis". Starting as solo-project Eve had been working with several musicans during that period, but none of them seemed to fit or shared the same vision Eve had for his project. So there hadn't been any continuity in the band and just loose "sessions" with changing musicians until Eve got to know Ashley Dayour in 1994 and they instantly decided to start to work together. Ashley first wanted to go for an even more sinister, gothic-related kinda name such as Carpe Noctem or Funeral Party, but Eve convinced him to use the name he had in his mind for years. That's what marked the beginning of Sanguis et Cinis as a band. They decided to organize shows before they even wrote songs together. Within a short amount of time the teamed up with a keyboardplayer and gave their first performance in their rehearsalroom in front of a handfull rather shocked people. The show ended up quite badly with burning curtains and Ashley slamming his guitar into his amp. They decided to never ever play music again. But things turned out differently.
Not a year had been passing by and they reconsidered their decision and agreed to perform as special guest on a at this time well-known party called Martyrium at a larger, highly frequented location in Vienna. Again - with no idea how to carry out this assignment. Shortly before the scheduled date they got to know Richard Lederer (who already was in 2 signed bands at that time) at a party at exact the same location and told him about their plans. He had been interested, joined them and they started writing songs together immediately. Within the next few days they wrote an entire setlist for the show, also including Schicksalswölfe and Gedankensplitter*, later to be found on Sanguis et Cinis' debutalbum Schicksal (*limited edition only). They also recorded selected songs and put them together on the first demotape called "Requiem 1791".
The show turned out well, so others followed (2nd show had already been outside Austria) and various other musicians joined the line-up. By the end of 1995 the line-up also included 1 flute player and 1 bass player. It didn't take long until the release of the 2nd demotape "untitled" in early 1996, including new songs and live-versions of songs from the demo. Most songs from this tape finally made it on the debutalbum "Schicksal".
After several shows in Austria and across the border the band had gathered a certain popularity within the Austrian underground and so the newly founded Recordcompany "MOS Records" from the principality of Liechtenstein came to their attention and without hesitation they offered them a recorddeal and invited them to record an album in Switzerland. Eve, knowing that the current line-up besides Ashley and Richard, wouldn't be up to the job, decided to make some major chances in the line-up. Celine Cecila Angel joined the band as female counterpart, that should be determining the special look the band had been knowing for from now on. Celine created an unique look, that could be described as "Goth-Fairy", never to be seen within the "goth-scene" before, that found many followers over the years. Her white, elvish outfits with pigtails and feather boas became an iconic new addittion to the many subcategories within the scene. Shortly before the recordings started Arthur joined the band and completed the new line-up. Within less than 2 weeks they recorded and mixed "Schicksal". Dissatisfied with the new direction and his lack of influence on the decisions Eve made, Ashley left a few weeks later to concentrate on his own band, he ran alongside. After the recordings things went stroke on stroke. Eve, Celine and Arthur went to Germany to shoot 2 videoclips. Richard had been busy with his other bands at this time, so he wasn't able to join them. Within 2 days they shot 2 clips later to be featured on the VHS-tape "das Siegel". This tape should have also contained an interview, as shown on the index on the backcover, but it didn't, which lead to confusion amongst the fans. The band refused to publish the interview, because at the time it had been shot they were too drunk. The backcover had already been printed and there hadn't been enough time for another interview, so the recordcompany put a sticker on the tape itself saying "without interview".
"Schicksal" turned out to be a huge success for the newcomers and suddenly they had all eyes on them and interview after interview followed. The at this time also new musicmagazine "ORKUS" featured Sanguis et Cinis in serveral huge articles and set the course for the growing popularity of the band within the European goth-scene and made significant contributions to the cult-status they gathered.
After a rather strange concert in Vienna featuring some ex-members along with the actual line-up, just a few weeks after the streetdate of their debut the remaining members returned to Switzerland to record the follow-up EP unfreiwillig abstrakt. While recording Richard revealed his decision to to concentrate only on his 3 other projects from this time on and leaving Sanguis et Cinis as a trio. Nevertheless the success of the band increased and successfull shows in Germany and Belgium followed.
